Why I wrote Dirty Linen: recording the toll the Troubles took on my parish, the long tail of trauma. How faint a trace our commonplace atrocities leave on the historical record and national consciousness, yet how indelibly they mark the lives left behind.

Dirty Linen: What’s that? What was it like growing up in the North during the Troubles? How long have you got? A 25-minute read teasing out threads of class, sectarianism and violence, with some light relief too, because who wants to read all that, right?

Three of my neighbours, Barry, Declan and Joe O’Dowd, were murdered by the UVF on January 4th, 1976. This is their story and that of their traumatised family. One timeline shows how the Troubles hit my own parish, Tullylish; another the toll one gun took.

Colin Davidson completed his portrait of Seamus Heaney in May 2013. In June, ahead of September’s official unveiling, and on a whim, he put the painting in his car and drove it to the poet’s home in Dublin. Otherwise, this treasured photograph would never have been taken....
