Traditionally, we model global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurements of how the Earth deforms during earthquakes with a 1D Earth structure. What if we didn't assume a 1D structure? Fadugba et al. show us that 3D matters more than we think:.

Ledeczi et al. find a ~30km band of active splay faults at the deformation front of the Cascadia subduction zone, while faults landward are covered in sediments. Such active faults are likely to slip coseismically during megathrust events. Read more:

Fascinating👇.

A very nice upside to naturally-occurring geothermal systems is that they can thermally destress faults, meaning they can reduce seismic hazards. The Ridgecrest M7.1 really demonstrated that when it couldn't rupture thru the Coso geothermal field.

Check out some recent work adding in seafloor geodetic observations for the Mw 7.8 2020 Simeonof, Alaska earthquake. The addition of this data confirms that the shallow megathrust did not rupture during the event.
