Analysis is needed to determine how important these factors actually are for this event. But it is good news!.

Several factors contribute: sparse population at risk, little vulnerable infrastructure, yes - but also possibly the nature of some (not all!) offshore megathrust quakes directing seismic energy away from land, and the position of the Kuril Trench relative to other coastlines.

The M8.8 off Kamchatka appears to be the largest earthquake ever recorded that apparently didn't kill anyone. That's really remarkable, if true.

It's a VERY large earthquake, possibly/probably among the 10 largest ever recorded. A clear subduction megathrust event. And another M>8.5 event with a notable foreshock (the recent M7.4 in same location), like Tohoku 2011. Tsunami warnings/watches should be taken seriously.

Other work by our group in Ledeczi et al. 2024 (also in @WeAreSeismica) shows that other, more distal splay faults in the outer wedge are instead likely to slip with the megathrust. Taken together, it means the most likely sources of tsunamigenic slip may need reexamination. 4/4

Some regions off Vancouver Island and Grays Harbor WA do show signs of a potentially-active megasplay fault. These locations are more likely to see slip and tsunamigenic displacement from this feature. 3/4.

Careful seismic interpretation led by Madeleine Lucas shows a that the lower slope break is not underlain by an active fault system in most locations - either buried by 100s of m of undeformed sediment, or missing entirely. 2/4.

PNW states use future subduction quake/tsunami scenarios to assess risk to the coast. The most-used scenario today involves a hypothetical massive splay fault extending all the way north to south - which we have shown is mostly non-existent. 1/4

Did an interview with @abbyacone of Q13 TV today on the 45th anniversary of the 1980 MS Helens eruption. We talked about PNSN/USGS monitoring of Cascade volcanoes today: how far we've come . and the real threat of funding cuts. We need a robust @USGS !

After 45 years of being on heightened alert from the Mt. St. Helens eruption, how are scientists in Washington feeling about increased volcanic activity in the Evergreen State?

Now refined to magnitude 3.2, a little late evening shake for Vashon and surroundings. I didn’t feel it myself, at home in Seattle.

We had a strongly felt magnitude 4.5 earthquake at Orcas Island, WA at 5:02 am PST. Not immediately associated with a specific fault, at 16 km (10 miles) depth. Numerous small aftershocks, none felt so far, are ongoing. @PNSN1 is working on more details about the event.
