With a contemporary smartphone, capturing, transmitting, and replicating sounds and visuals is a breeze, yet replicating scents remains elusive. If you want to change this, consider joining the 2025 @DR_E_A_M Olfaction Challenge at https://t.co/sNJGvwkZ5j. @jeriscience

Scientists at Firmenich https://t.co/av6voiNc9u and now Givaudan https://t.co/zGC6gZ24xn report several olfactory receptors that appear to map cleanly onto specific odor notes (earthy, grapefruit, woody, etc.).

@DR_E_A_M @jeriscience My favorite part of these challenges is after the competition closes. All participants get together and work collaboratively on a manuscript summarizing key insights and where the field stands. Join us!

@DR_E_A_M @jeriscience Most existing models predict odor perception at just one concentration. Yet, some odorants dramatically shift in quality as concentration changes—such as grapefruit mercaptan, pleasantly fruity at low concentrations but distinctly sulfurous at high levels.

@DR_E_A_M @jeriscience This year, we have two challenges: 1) Predicting how odor quality changes with concentration, and 2) Describing an olfactory mixture. You can make up to three leaderboard submissions until July 21st, with one final submission allowed before August 8th.

@DR_E_A_M @jeriscience Ten years ago the first DREAM Olfaction Prediction Challenge launched to predict the smell of a molecule from its structure. This led to a publication establishing benchmarks https://t.co/j0E3ZtXRVH , and then a subsequent surge in predictive modeling.

Drugs like Ozempic are great for weight loss, but they make some people feel sick. We discovered that the brain circuits mediating the appetite suppression are distinct from those that mediate nausea – a finding that may be leveraged to develop more selective GLP1-based drugs.

Today in @Nature-- @MonellSc researchers, led by @AmberAlhadeff, share new findings that point towards a possible way to reduce adverse side effects of popular next-generation obesity medications like GLP1-based drugs, known as semaglutide and marketed as Ozempic® and Wegovy®
