3) If you are a tourist exploring NYC attractions #WhatsGoodNYC—sorry, no recommendations for a K.p. tour. (@IlievLab can’t help, but @ThrillistNYC might). 4) If you are a #scientist , check your laboratory mice for K.p (@IlievLab can help)- it can alter research outcomes.

Helpful notes:.1) If you are a mouse and haven’t got your K.p yet, make sure to get some (@IlievLab can help)- it can protect you against parasitic worms! #evolutionbenefit of #commensalism.2) Food #allergy in mice- If any, K.p makes symptoms worst via Type 2 immune-mediated mech

It is so well adapted to its host that the immune system remains oblivious to its presence………until #mucusfluctuations caused by #diet or #antibiotics get K.p in contact with the gastric #epithelium. Check out the paper for the fascinating immune mechanism that this unlocks!.

We found that K.p dominates the murine #mycobiome, thrives at body temp, outstands competition by other #fungi and is inherited across generations. It is uniquely adapted to the GI tract and gets around the bacterially “overcrowded” intestines by colonizing the stomach.

Our search for gut fungal commensal across rural and city habitats, and across multiple laboratory mouse colonies brought us to #Kazachstania pintolopesii (K.p)

While fungi like #Candida albicans are common in humans, the gut #mycobiota of lab mice—a key model in #immunity and #microbiome research—is highly variable. Attempts to isolate mouse gut fungal commensals have been unsuccessful, limiting basic and translational #research.

RT @LarsVereecke: 🎉 Super excited to announce that our study "Colibactin-driven colon cancer requires adhesin-mediated epithelial binding"….
nature.com
Nature - The oncogenic potential of pks+ Escherichia coli depends critically on bacterial adhesion to host epithelial cells mediated by the type 1 pilus adhesin FimH and the F9 pilus adhesin FmlH.

Shoutout to the brilliant Alexa Semon @_alexafluor ! She was rocking @IlievLab , now rocking the research on a major gut pathogen C.diff! Beautiful design, congratulations to the team & current lab @joeyzacks @WeissmanLab @IGGPenn.
I’m proud to share our recent publication describing the development of a multivalent mRNA-LNP vaccine for C. difficile that incorporates targets across C. diff’s complex life cycle

Opps, not intended, forgot to share open access link “beyond the healthcare arena, advances in biotechnology, drug discovery, agriculture, sustainable fuel development, and the materials industry position fungi as key factors in sustainable production. ".
Nice to see spotlight on fungi in @CellCellPress , but this piece is one-dimensional, only recognizing fungi as (human) pathogens. Ignoring ecosystem services, white biotech etc. Mycologists spoke up previously against this one-dimensional view.
