Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917). Made his first ascent in a balloon at Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1863 during the American Civil War. Inspired, he went on to develop the large rigid airship, powered by motors, lifted by gas, that would bomb Edinburgh on 2-3 April 1916.

Not long to go now for my next talk. I'll be heading north of the border to Edinburgh to talk on Sunday about the Zeppelin raid on the city 110 years ago. @WFASouthScot Really looking forward to it.

Was there a big turnout? I was looking at the prices things went for last night. Impressive.
@1940Andy @IanCastleRaids Was at the Barnes Wallis auction today, was lovely. His grand daughters were there and were happy to talk to people. Everyone there took something home. It was a lovely atmosphere. Middle of the auction, huge thunderclap so a guy rushed out to bring his dog in...yes, a black lab!

That's very nice - but a bit confusing too! It says L 32 and the date 24 Sept.1916, which is when it was shot down. But then underneath it says Shot Down 4 May 1916 🤔

Bombing of Hull - 5/6 March 1916. A Zeppelin attack on the Firth of Forth was foiled this night by a snowstorm. Instead, Zeppelins L11 & L14 bombed Hull causing 70 casualties. But Edinburgh's encounter with Kapitänleutnant Alois Böcker of the L14 would only be delayed 4 weeks.

Today is that day when you're a year older than you were yesterday. And what a wonderful way to celebrate - with a bottle of 'Zeppelin' wine. The label translates as: 'The most drunk wine on the journeys of the Graf Zeppelin. #EveryoneLovesAZeppelin

The dig was about 25 years ago - the position in the rocks is about 1000 metres out from the cairns in your photo. See photo from rocks looking back to Isandlwana.
