Peter Watkins gone. He was a hugely important filmmaker. Best known for The War Game but his 1964 Culloden film still influences way history TV is made today. It’s not perfect but it’s amazing and on YouTube as a good print. Watch it in his honour!

OTD 1854 - Charge of the Light Brigade. Here's my fave Lady Butler painting: Balaclava (1876), which drew criticism for showing reality of war. Central figure is veteran of charge William Henry Pennington who posed. Look and feel of work influenced Tony Richardson's 1968 movie.

Busy few days at Culloden rounded off by giving a guided tour. Thrilled to be heading home knowing we’ve made a genuine contribution to our understanding of battle over the last few days. Great to catch up with people and look forward to our next get together. @NTS_archaeology

Another busy day at Culloden. Worked some boggy terrain, which in 1746 caused Jacobite left difficulty in advance & retreat, but provided valuable insight into battle. Presenting initial thoughts on our discoveries in a talk at Visitor Centre 6pm tomorrow. https://t.co/36g51YzxDh

Great to be back on the field at Culloden, and a beautiful day into the bargain. On the surface all is now still, but the battle still lurks beneath our feet. @NTS_archaeology @UofGWarstudies @UofGArchaeo

Never mind the weak headline. Ronnie was a delight this morning. Wonderful stories tied into the music. Classic.

A great day of some serious discussion and catching up with old friends. Well done to my colleagues for organising this. @DigWaterloo @UofGWarstudies @UofGHistory @UofGArchaeo
We are delighted to hear from a number of speakers, including the Waterloo Uncovered team, archaeology and wellbeing volunteers and representatives from the heritage sector. From our experience, archaeology is a powerful tool to improve the wellbeing of veterans. @BelgiuminUK

Dear friends, Elon Musk continues his efforts to silence all voices supporting Ukraine and democracy, this time updating the algorithm to suppress our reach. Let's break his stupid algorithm: Comment on this post with "Ukraine will win!". Our fire will never be extinguished.

This week I gave the last of my annual three lectures on Cuba (missile crisis) for the last time and marked my last ever Masters dissertation. Yes, it’s bittersweet but it’s time for a change. I’ll miss Cuba though

Oh my, does Peter Hammill still have it. Stunning solo set tonight. Takes something special to drag me into Edinburgh on a school night (or any other night), and this had it in spades. Here’s Patient. Not even sure it’s in frame as recorded with cover closed.

Lot of understandable excitement about the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 50th anniversary release just now. Will probably get there, but when it comes to prog gods l’ll more than make up for it in Edinburgh on Monday.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Danny Thompson. Enjoyed him many a time live as the perfect partner to John Martyn’s mesmerising guitar and vocals. Hope they are playing together again somewhere.

Eve of my last ever new academic year. Everything I do from now until end of May will be for last time. Tomorrow it's the intro lecture for my Islands at War in the 20th century course. I've always liked this one and sure some of content will get post-retirment outings.
