Incredible to talk with @jonlovett at the @PodSaveAmerica studios in Hollywood! Our entertainment industry in LA is dying because of our inability to build.

Omar Fateh is the lead author of two bills that most YIMBYs would love: -Land value tax pilots -Allowing highway funds to be used for transit & require community approval before new highways are built in low-income communities Fateh also supported a bill that would have banned
Jacob Frey's only solution to the affordable housing crisis is to build more, but under his leadership we've only seen rent and property taxes go up. When I’m elected, yes we will build more housing AND we'll use every tool in the toolbox to address housing needs in Minneapolis.

This measure is a BFD for CA. Creates reasonable timelines that agencies have to abide by throughout the entire CEQA process. And the sleeper kicker: Agencies must issue all permit needed to construct within 90 days of final certification.
“We’ve fallen too far behind in building the infrastructure that our communities desperately need.” Read @CalChamberJen commentary on why @CalChamber has filed an initiative to modernize and streamline approval of the state’s essential projects. https://t.co/sQOjapLvMj

Transit nerds! Can anyone tell me why the US doesn’t have triple-door boarding buses?

City of LA needs to be building 14,250 units each quarter to meet housing demand, yet @MayorOfLA says we don’t need the state to step in because we’re doing fine on our own.

8/ But if @CAForever doesn’t link itself to the broader region, it risks becoming an isolated enclave feasibly accessible only by car — repeating the very mistakes it’s trying to fix.

7/ And with future projects like Link21 and Capitol Corridor electrification, you could have direct, zero-emission trains from CA Forever to Downtown San Francisco. That’s how you build a real, connected city.

6/ With a small spur line along existing ROW from Suisun City to CA Forever, the new city could connect directly to the entire Bay Area. The extension would get trains within blocks of downtown and, if paired with a local bus hub, could enable car-free access across the city.

5/ But the solution is right there — just 15 miles from the city’s proposed downtown. The existing Capitol Corridor rail line already connects San Jose to Sacramento and passes through nearby Suisun City.

4/ The plan also includes up to 116,700 parking spots in garages (not counting street parking). While at 0.29 spaces per person it is lower than avg, but most of these car trips will use just three roads to go outside the city. That’s a recipe for gridlock and pollution.

3/ But stepping back, the proposal to connect a new city the size of Bakersfield to the outside world would mostly rely on carpool & toll lanes — plus a couple bus routes if we’re lucky.

2/ To start, the urban design proposed within the city itself is excellent — compact neighborhoods with walkable streets where shops and amenities are just a short walk from home. Within the city, 20 rapid bus routes are planned, making any destination only a short ride away.

1/ This project could positively transform how cities are built in America for decades to come. But one glaring issue could turn this urbanism dream into a car-dependent dystopia. A 🧵 on @CAForever's plan to connect 400,000 people to the outside world with just two bus lines.
1/ 🇺🇸 Today, @CAForever submitted detailed plans for the next great American city, an hour north of Silicon Valley, including: Solano Foundry, America’s largest manufacturing park, Solano Shipyard, our largest shipyard, and walkable neighborhoods for 400,000 Californians.

I like that Porter is warming up to YIMBYism but this is so yikes on so many levels. Quality of character does matter, and this + other stories do not bode well for her leadership capabilities. How can you be effective when you alienate potential allies?
I cannot believe how bad this interview is? 3 minutes and it just totally devolves. https://t.co/5FU7rJifBV

Want to know why there’s so few young leaders in the Democratic party? Because the people in office have been there for the past 30+ years, leaving no opportunity for young folks to ascend into bigger positions. @SenMarkey is a champion, but we need to look to the future.
I was for @SenMarkey in 2020. But it's time for him to pass the torch. One-third of Americans over the age of 85 have dementia. Markey would be 82 at the start of his next term. Me and @JNicholsWorley for @CWBeacon

Putting action behind words, LA City Council Candidate @JonRawlingsCD3 just painted some guerrilla crosswalks in front of a preschool because the city was taking too long. My kind of politician. We’re not waiting to make our communities a better place.

Very interesting breakdown of #SB79 votes by age!
@zennonuc @MayorOfLA @AsmSadeElhawary @SenMariaEDurazo Quick chart of the SB 79 assembly vote by age, bucketed by half decade. Estimated DOB for Assemblymembers who only had birth years available, and nine are excluded because I did not find any good data for their birthdate.
