I'm grading grad student papers and one of them keeps using "it's" when "its" is appropriate and I'm not saying I'm a harsh grader but I'm torn between giving the paper a failing grade or stabbing the author with an ice pick.
like there seems to be an image of the millennial as a perpetually broke avocado toast eating person with an ipad for a hand but like A) that's far MORE true of generation z (i didn't get internet until 8th grade) and B) not at all their fault
But what if I told you my PhD program has offered me the most stability I’ve had as an adult? After graduating with a BA in history in 2013 and interests in the lucrative fields of writing, libraries, and literature, it was and continues to be my best option
In the words of James Baldwin "I love America more than any other country in the world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually."
Like, politicizing what needs to be politicized is the only thing that has ever worked. LBJ pushed through civil rights legislation because JFK was murdered. Politicize the shit out of every tragedy
A few things to add:
1.: people say incompletes make things worse. I have never seen this.
2. If your worried about your TA’s workload, grade it yourself
@ba_lyons
My mom did go to college (but not the norm) but we still once had an aunt infestation so bad that a solid wall of aunts just covered my bed in a layer.

No, it’s not bad that elite schools pay their students more than 30k a year. It’s bad that I (for example) attend a Public Ivy bank rolled by big oil and we are celebrating a raise to 21,000 dollars. They deserve that money. So do we.
Hey y’all, students are in the “real world.” Beyond the very real jobs, care taking responsibilities, family stuff etc that many students have before even coming to college they’ve all now spent 18 months in a pandemic
In my journal rejection literally said that my writing did not fit the standards of “such a prestigious journal” and to try a lesser one. WHAT THE FUCK
of course, you gain valuable skills in a Ph.D program! but you have to respect the skills and credential of other careers if you want to work in them! You can't just settle for highly competitive creative or education careers!
I asked for an extension once in college. Senior year my final Marxist theory paper, my grad seminar (why) paper and my poli sci thesis were due on the same day. I planned ahead but was so tired. Got the extension no questions but felt so guilty, like a failure
i am more scared of COVID than average, but I am also more likely to die. Because I am fat, I will get less care, less attention, less less. And because I have heart issues and Sleep Apnea and 1000 other things I am higher risk for complications. So don't tell me I am too scared
@TenuredRadical
Good for you. There are fewer jobs and more people and much higher rent now. If you think grad students aren’t working you know nothing
"The price of the disaster of slavery and civil war was the necessity of quickly assimilating into American democracy a mass of ignorant laborers in whose hands alone for the moment lay the power of preserving the ideals of popular government...
To be fair, everyone gets an automatic 2 weeks if they let me know (honestly if they don’t too.) if needed it’s extended. They know the deadlines are there to guide them and schedule but mostly they are for them. Also it’s easier to grade not all at once
the best alt-ac plan, to me, is to start preparing immediately. If you want to be considered for museum jobs, work in museums. If you want to be considered for writing jobs, freelance, intern, work in writing. If you want to teach k-12, get that teaching credential too.
I just applied to a 10 hour a week job that requires a BA. This is why "we" (the privileged few) are all still on the parental dole or living in our parents basement (if we can get that sort of thing) and are ruining chain restaurants and not buying houses. fyi.
I knew when I entered my Ph.D. program that I may not get a TT job. And i still did it anyway. Because I like it, because well paying jobs for people with BA's in the humanities at non brand name state schools don't exist, because if I only get 5/6 years of this it will be good?
was blocked for my comments along the same lines, so I am just going to say it. Teaching may be enjoyable, but teaching as a grad student is PRIMARILY exploitative labor. No matter how much you want to help students, learn pedagogy, and engage it is primarily exploitative
I have spoken to a number of people applying to grad school right now out of fear and desperation and lack of any apparent alternatives. I get it, I really do. But grad school is not a solution to your current or future problems.
do academics not realize that when they "accidentally" double book an adjunct or let go of a teaching assistant, WE ACTUALLY HAVE NO SOURCE OF INCOME.
sorry doesn't feed us.

GUYS. I have major depression. Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, PTSD. Agoraphobia for good measure. I’m a basket case.
Yet, somehow, I’ve never killed anyone.
I’m much more likely to be the victim of violence than commit it myself.

Everyone concerned about my life: I am giving ghost tours this summer while on food stamps and student loans and trying to write two chapters in one of the most expensive cities in American (Austin). My rent is 1600 dollars a month. I sometimes use the food bank.
If a graduate student finishes, moves away, 4 years pass, and her leather satchel remains in her office can someone (me) rescue the bag from obscurity?
Does seem to be dependent on discipline though. Classes with quizzes/exams, answers to give back etc have different fairness questions than all reading/notes/papers course like mine.
