Perhaps the biggest ‘aha’ moment for me from our last trip was realizing how the role of the frontline infantry has changed in recent months.
People look to the need to mobilise more and improve training, and that isn't wrong per se, but the rapidly changing threat environment on the other end - the battlefield - means that whatever is done, the larger infantry crisis is impossible to properly resolve. (graphic by me)

I think it took watching CGI battles properly to appreciate the spectacle of real men on real horses charging real squares, across a vast expanse of battlefield. When I first watched it in the 80s it seemed a bit boring; now I find it utterly jaw-dropping.
