In a week of bad news Kennedy v. Bremerton School District hit me pretty hard. I just sent this letter to my former coach because I don't know what else to do.

quietly begging media outlets to stop being surprised by Ukrainian women contributing to the war effort.
women's contributions to political violence are not a novelty, they're an integral part of conflict dynamics.
It’s here! If you have any interest in every day life in rebel groups and women’s experiences during and after war, download a copy for free for the next two weeks!
In light of recent reporting, I am no longer affiliated w/ the GWU Program on Extremism. While there are many people that are, or were, affiliated w/ the POE that I respect, I cannot continue an affiliation in good faith in light of this new-to-me information.
Embarrassing confession:
Yesterday I went to urgent care because I couldn’t get my heart rate < 100 bpm.
Normal EKG & chest X-ray ( 🎉) means that the doc’s recommendation is to reduce stress ( & ☕️ ). Feeling much better today but: this was a reminder that rest isn’t optional!

welp, between the crushing loss of a fundamental human right last week and the school prayer case dredging up memories of being preached to by my soccer coach's wife and then benched over religion, I'm going to just scream into a pillow.
not to yuck anyone's yum but: I fundamentally do not understand how pregnancy came to be understood as this like, magical, pastel-hued, transcendental experience.
pregnancy is the most punk thing I've ever done. I don't feel like a beautiful earth mama, I feel metal as hell.
I know everyone is trying their best and I truly am not trying to be a jerk, but the timelines associated with academic publishing continue to feel like an elaborate joke: 9 months to get copy edits, 1 week to return them.
Pleased that this article, examining the legacies of rebel humanitarian aid provision in the 1980s famine in Ethiopia, is finally out:
As ever, lmk if you don’t have institutional access.
Absolutely AMPED to be contributing to this series! Signed a contract to provide a manuscript on rebel marriage practices and their impact on women’s lives during and after war yesterday! 🎉🎉🎉 excited to work with this team!

Elements Series on Gender & Politics. We're looking for short monographs (20-30k words) that focus on both traditional areas of gender & politics research + new frontiers in the field. Write 'em, read 'em, cite 'em!
absolutely devastated to learn from my undergrads today that they don’t use Twitter so ‘summarize the argument of the article in a tweet’ (h/t
@SKalyvas
) is not the hip way of connecting with the youths I had hoped it was.
wish I still didn't have a chip on my shoulder from something that happened half a lifetime ago, but here we are! If your kid is going through something similar, I'm happy to talk to them (or you about how my parents supported me through a really shitty and confusing time). 2/2
Before affiliating I should have done my due diligence about the director’s research and professional activities; I didn’t and I regret that. To be extremely clear: I condemn in the strongest possible terms Islamophobia.
Breaking News: Executives from over 250 drug companies called for the reversal of a judge’s abortion drug ruling, warning it could disrupt the entire industry.
rough week (personally and professionally) and after nearly 2 years of covid-land I am no better at sitting with uncertainty or disappointment.
trying to savor the little wins, like kicking it with my pupper; other photos of Very Good Pets welcome.

Pleased that my latest article, with Jakana Thomas and Mariam Santara, is now available! ‘From the public to the private: mapping women’s formal and informal participation in peacebuilding in Mali’
My loving parents, who never doubted my ability to finish my PhD and who have been cheerleaders at countless marathons and who know that I am a college professor, apparently felt the need to PACK CANS OF CRANBERRY SAUCE IN THEIR LUGGAGE AS THEY TRAVELED FROM GEORGIA TO COLORADO.
uh, guys, not to defend the bird app and El*n but are we all just conveniently forgetting how bad zuck has been at moderating hate speech?
not in the mood to trade one billionaire-run hellsite for another.
watch this space! thrilled that "In Love and at War: Marriage in Non-State Armed Groups" will be the inaugural text in the Cambridge Elements in Gender and Politics.

Was feeling p down (been bogged down with administrative stuff this week and just bummed out by 2022) but then this big, dumb cuddle monster climbed onto my lap.
~70 lbs of unfettered adoration and fluff.

's tweet: I love teaching, I am an extrovert, and my students are wonderful
- AND STILL, after ~5 hours of teaching on Mondays, I am functionally useless.
(curious how much of this is my degraded social stamina after a couple years of pandemic life)
I get why the stories about the 'ghost pilot of Kyiv' & the "Russian warship, go f*ck yourself" quote & giving Russian soldiers sunflower seeds are everywhere.
We want stories of badassery.
I just also want there to be a recognition of the heroism of surviving & giving care.
a moment that lives rent free in my head is asking a dude I was dating if he had seen 'The Princess Bride' and he responded along the lines of 'listen to the title, do you think I've seen it?'
like... congrats on too tough for an all-time great comedic film?
what advice would you give grad students?
been thinking and I think the best advice I have is to be a squeaky wheel. nobody will be as invested in your success as you are or will know your specific needs as well as you do.
speak up, politely, about what you need to succeed.

Thanks to the
@MehdiHasanShow
for having me on to discuss my new report with
@DevorahMargolin
on women’s involvement in the January 6th riot. Clip here:
During a bike ride today, my husband took a photo of me, explaining ‘I want you to see how strong your quads look.’
I really, really, really love having a partner that appreciates those sorts of things and helps me appreciate them too.
I saw an extremely dumb take from a fitness/leadership influencer saying that we should all be doing burpees to prepare for war and I am torn between hysterical laughter and sobbing.
super happy that "Women’s Participation in Violent Non-State Organizations" (w/ the incredible
@meredithloken
) is out and (it looks like) open-access:
In 2022 I finally ‘gave in’ & got on medication to help w/ OCD. I finally feel like myself again. 🎉
Stigma about meds put me off for years. If you’re struggling & therapy isn’t enough, please be smarter than I was about medication as a possibility & talk to a psychiatrist.
thanks to the excellent team at
@WPReview
for featuring this article, in which I shamelessly plug my new book and discuss the importance of marriage for rebel groups
during today's ultrasound, baby M was sticking her tongue out, yawning, and flapping her jaw.
the ultrasound tech said 'she's going to be chatty!' and, in seeing a flash of my future, I have never felt more compassion for my parents.
sometimes I miss my early morning routine of drinking scalding hot coffee and focusing on work without any distractions, but then my baby girl lets out a little pterodactyl shriek and grins at me and I think I'm fine being distracted for another day.
A man that I am confident has used the term ‘snowflake’ unironically just tattled to my husband that a joke I made about his obsession with rifles is him overcompensating hurt his feelings, in case any of y’all forgot that masculinity is remarkably fragile.
can't stop thinking about how, because I'm in my 30s w/ an autoimmune disease and thus a 'high risk' pregnancy, access to safe and legal abortion is a prerequisite for me to even consider thinking about trying to maybe get pregnant. tgif, amirite?
Seeing a lot of advice (good and bad) about the job market and how to prepare yourself and my unsolicited nugget is: the first version of your job talk is going to suck. Don’t be demoralized!
in all likelihood, we'll have a newborn in less than 5 weeks. for those of you that have been through that experience, what did you do in the final stretch that made your life easier? alternatively, what should I not waste my time doing?
re the housing market in Denver:
it's not so much that I got "sticker shock," it's that I'm now deep in the throws of "financial nihilism."
money is fake! nothing matters! I'm never bringing a lunch again! catch me at the casinos, slack jaw'ed and joyless at the slot machines!
ICYMI:
@WPReview
published the first in a series of articles I'm writing on women and world politics.
Inspired by so many of my incredible students, colleagues, and friends, my goal is to show that 'feminist international relations is for everyone.'
Efforts to increase the number of ♀️ in politics often overlook the possibility of violent backlash resisting any potential change in the status quo. A short, belated thread on our findings (1/5):

look, I'm not trying to pile on but:
1) main character syndrome is out of control. this is so disrespectful to the race organizers.
2) as someone else noted, it's hard to believe that she ran sub 8's for 13 miles without training and others in the photo are CLEARLY walking
Still not totally comfortable with marriage as an institution but incredibly amped that my husband and I have an entire shelf dedicated to peanut-butter-based snacks.
