(1) Another stark example of how the Compensation Criminal Injuries Scheme (@CICAgov) is not fit for purpose. At ATLEU, we’ve also seen survivors of trafficking fall through the cracks and be denied the compensation they deserve.

A woman sexually assaulted on a flight to London is calling for a change to close a gap in the law that prevents her receiving compensation, @BBCNews reports. She is represented by @ClairePowell94.

(2) Language matters, and this type of framing dehumanises and demonises migrant communities who were invited to the UK to fill our labour shortages. The @ukhomeoffice should not be fuelling anti-migrant sentiments.

(1) Using terms like 'cracking down' implies that low-wage overseas hires are the problem, when the issue is poorly designed UK visa schemes that enable exploitation.

Net migration is down – and we’re going further. By raising Skilled Worker requirements to degree level and cracking down on low-wage overseas hires, we’re ending overreliance on cheap labour and making employers invest in homegrown talent.

(2) With @ATLEU’s help, I took my traffickers to court. But trafficking isn’t a civil offence, so we had to find other legal routes. I won, but my case shows how hard it still is for survivors. We need change, including a civil remedy, so that justice becomes the norm.

(1) My name is Mrs T, and I took my trafficker to court and won. For nearly ten years, I was trafficked between my home country, the Gulf, and the UK. I worked 18-hour days, slept on the floor, wasn’t allowed to leave the house alone, and I was paid far below minimum wage.

(2) The civil courts do not recognise trafficking as a civil offence, which prevents survivors from receiving the full compensation they deserve. @UKLabour must establish a civil remedy for trafficking into law to hold traffickers to account and #MakeThemPay.

(1) Compensation paid by traffickers is a powerful tool of punishment and prevention and can be life-changing for survivors’ recovery. But the UK’s record on compensation is disgraceful, as very few survivors are able to obtain compensation from their traffickers.

@UKLabour (2) This is a call to @UKLabour: Without a #CivilRemedy in place, Traffickers are exploiting people and walking away with profit and impunity. We must prioritise justice and remedy, strengthen protections, and put survivors at the centre of your response. # EndTheExploitation.

(1) This #WorldDayAgainstTrafficking we are calling on the government to build a system that welcomes, not wounds, and protects, not punishes. The @UKLabour government must build a system centred around survivors, where all survivors can access safety, justice, and remedy.

(2) Trafficking right now is not considered a civil offence, and survivors are struggling to access compensation. The government must establish a civil remedy for trafficking and modern slavery into law to hold traffickers to account and #MakeThemPay.

(1) This #WorldDayAgainstHumanTrafficking, we’re calling for urgent change: better protection for survivors, and real consequences for traffickers. Support must be survivor-centred, and justice must reach those who profit from exploitation. #MakeThemPay #EndTheExploitaition

Hostile political rhetoric around migration creates fertile ground for traffickers. When migrants are demonised or disbelieved, they’re pushed further into the shadows, and into the hands of exploiters. @UKLabour must end this rhetoric to protect survivors of #HumanTrafficking.

(2) The @UKHomeOffice’s hostile policies increase the risk of human trafficking and prevent those trapped in exploitation from escaping. The political climate has empowered traffickers and silenced survivors. It’s time to flip the equation. #EndTheExploitaition #MakeThemPay.

(1) This Wednesday is the @UNODC_HTMSS #WorldDayAgainstTrafficking. Tens of thousands of people are trafficked every year, 49.6 million people are estimated to be living in modern slavery on any given day, and over 122,000 are estimated to be in modern slavery in the UK in 2021.
