It’s World Octopus Day. There were 4,200 Lego octopuses inside the shipping container that fell off the Tokio Express in 1997. We found our first Lego octopus soon afterwards but didn’t discover another for 18 years. They do still turn up though. Two were found in Cornwall this

From the perspective of maintaining an academic record, this functionality of @OSFramework does seem like a problem. I wonder if there is some technical feature of OSF that could be enabled to set up in a way to make a record permanent?

Relatedly why do ppl not see fares as a regressive tax? We want less driving and more transit riding. And ppl of lower incomes ride more transit. So why do we let drivers use roads for free, but charge ppl to ride transit? Again genuine question - I actually want u to say why lol
Libraries are free. Driving on most roads is free. Public school is free. Calling the cops is free. Parks are free. How does free public transit differ from any of these other things besides that we don’t already have it?

A few years ago, @KavliFoundation funded me on a project to launch a learner- and educator-facing set of resources for working with @NeurodataWB files. I'm excited to say that the first set of "nwb4edu" lessons are now live and ready for adapting! https://t.co/Nzsyhgb0Jz

I'm curious who signed off on this part: "UF agreed to continue to pay Sasse a base salary of just over $1 million through February 2028 ..., according to a contract addendum dated July 18, the same day Sasse publicly announced his resignation."
The University of Florida spent over $200k on travel for highly paid hires of then-President Ben Sasse, who permitted them to work from home in other states. Read my latest investigation piece, this time for @FreshTakeFla in the @MiamiHerald:

The National Gallery in London is renovating its Sainsbury Wing and they’ve just found a secret letter from one of the original donors, sunk into a concrete column, saying that he hates the columns and is glad they’re being demolished. 10/10 unhinged rich man behaviour, no notes

Reminds me of https://t.co/3oLzdLCoKY , which @ragamouf shared in Carpentries slack last week. TLDR; when asked to evaluate learning and teaching, students often rate "satisfaction" (see also attribute substitution); satisfaction and learning are often at odds with each other!

There's a lot of privilege to be teaching subjects that are unlikely to expose you to that level of public critique. And one could legitimately also discuss the socio-political context for why certain version control tools are adopted over others beyond just technical merits!

"Don't bring politics into teaching" I agree with not bringing up who I vote for when I'm teaching a class on version control with git. Some folks use it to suspend public health faculty who discuss how some policy decisions affect health outcomes.
