Memphis scored the first 2 times they ran this action yesterday.
The latter two times later in the game LA had it defended well and shut it down.
A good Memphis result overall @ 1.5 PPP but LA adjusted their approach in-game to finish in a great spot.

Over 700 ATO from the 2022/23 season clipped (clips linked in doc) and tagged w/ lineup and some PBP data via Google Docs
Questions/constructive criticism encouraged - particularly on play tags!
Ja Morant had three go-ahead field goals in the final 1:30, all against Herb Jones
Per ESPN Stats & Info, that ties the most go-ahead FG in the final 1:30 of a 4Q over the last 25 years
Today is the last game the Memphis Grizzlies will play without Ja Morant as part of his suspension
Looking at 3+ man scoring actions (and misc.) featuring Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr. from the 2022/23 season
I've clipped all of Tarık Biberovic's 3PA (27/45) in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague (unfortunately BSL clips/games are near-impossible, for me, to find)
Biberovic was picked by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 56th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft playing w/ Fenerbahçe
Jaren Jackson Jr. on what he worked on this summer
"Decision making, playmaking, I am going to get doubled more... I was doubled a lot late last season"
> Happy to hear him echoing Jenkins here. Also watched a lot of Dirk apparently...

Taylor Jenkins, Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach, on areas for Jaren Jackson Jr. to take a step forward
"Offensively, enhance playmaking but efficient playmaking... Putting him in read-based situations and trying to elevate his game there..." LOVE IT!!

Taking a look at GG Jackson's most positive/scalable traits through the first part of his rookie season (small sample size)
- Secondary Rim Protection
- Three-Point Shooting
- Free Throw Rate on Drives
- Role as a P&R Roll Man
2022/23 was somewhat of a lost year for Ziaire Williams so what did he do well in 2021/22?
A look at Ziaire and his rookie season with the Memphis Grizzlies when he started 31 games and finished the season with 8/2/1

Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach Taylor Jenkins spoke about Trey Jemison and his first game with the team
In the post game press conference Jenkins mentioned the Grizzlies sprinkling in a defensive coverage against the Cavs and noted Jemison executed it well 🔊

here is where Bismack Biyombo ranked near the top of the league and where he ranked near the bottom of the league compared to his peers in 2022/23
The Memphis Grizzlies are planning to sign center Bismack Biyombo, sources tell
@TheAthletic
@Stadium
. Team is able to sign Biyombo via exemption after fifth game of Ja Morant’s suspension. Biyombo brings rim protection (1.4 blocks per game last season) with Steven Adams out.
A look at my favourite, and one of the most productive, sets in the Memphis Grizzlies playbook - Horns Offence and their most frequent variations
- Horns Ballscreens, Horns Out, Horns Exchange into Miami, Horns Twist, Pop into Chicago, and Horns Ghost
Taylor Jenkins, Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach, on Santi Aldama and Spain in FIBA
"Unique skillset... not just playing perimeter, spacer... Can he be a guy that puts the ball in his hands? Bring the ball full court? Trying to encourage him to do that" 🧐
Not sure of the Q source
Good look at GG Jackson's complimentary scoring skills
Memphis Grizzlies running Horns Out Chase (w/ Ziaire + Tillman) but Wagner is the low-man cheating off GG and Vince audibles
Memphis Grizzlies | JJJ ATO Stagger
Mentioned yesterday but Stagger Away was the Grizzlies best scoring set coming into today’s game (1.044 PPP)
Here are two looks to set it up for Jaren Jackson Jr. out of the timeout
Stagger Away > Stagger Twirl Punch
Do you like Vince Williams Jr. and Bart queries? I wrote about a statistical profile that may have helped the Grizzlies identify VWJ, LaRavia, and Roddy in 2022
Looking at Collin Murray-Boyles, Johni Broome, Jonathan Mogbo, and more in the 2024 draft
Taylor Jenkins, Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach, on continuing to use Steven Adams as a playmaker
"I want the ball to be in his hands and not just rely on screen and roll or [DHO], we're going to explore some of the other spots on the floor"

(In the Expos hat)
Circling back to the Patrick St. Andrews hire
A big change in the 2021 Bucks system was the use of the Dunker Spot - particularly when it came to guards/wings occupying the spot
Will use this thread to try to highlight this change and how it could affect the Memphis Grizzlies
Steven Adams absence is most obvious in rebounding but a glaring hole is Memphis Grizzlies' 4/5 playmaking hub in their Delay (0.63 PPP) and Pinch (0.87 PPP) sets
Memphis Grizzlies averaged 1.05 PPP and 1.12 PPP on these sets respectively w/ Adams healthy in 2022/23
Memphis Grizzlies | Ja Morant Decoy Sets
Ja Morant is back day!
Looking at how Coach Jenkins and the Assistant Coaches create opportunities for Ja within the flow of offence through decoy/dummy actions and disguising plays

"3rd Gear is Transition Offence... 2nd Gear is in-between game... 1st Gear is dead-ball situations..."
⚙️⚙️⚙️ is the new approach to Memphis Grizzlies offence
GG Jackson 3-Point shooting through his three stints with South Carolina Gamecocks, Memphis Hustle, and Memphis Grizzlies
Through 32 3FGA (50%) in the NBA he is hovering near the average he was at the same point with the Hustle (46.88%)
@Ziaire
"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD." 🤔
I had to google that
Memphis latter tried to run an Oklahoma action out of stagger screens but Austin Reaves shut it down quickly.
This is the stuff that makes playoff matchups/adjustments so exciting
First ATO didn't go so well but Memphis Grizzlies use the second possession to set up Horns Out Chase using Tillman to space the floor with Gobert playing deep off him
"Position-less" basketball Taylor Jenkins and the Memphis Grizzlies are talking about
Luke using a trailing-Gilyard as a Get-hub where historically it would be a PF/C
Worth investigating but Jaren Jackson Jr. this season
Isolations 1.296 PPP
Post-Ups 1.085 PPP
P&R Ball Handler 1.067 PPP
Attacking Closeout 0.780 PPP
P&R Roll Man 0.806 PPP
Elite scorer as a focal point but struggling as a complimentary piece
Memphis Grizzlies salary-matching for trades under the new CBA (effective July 01). For teams below the first apron:
- Up to $7.5M in outgoing salary can bring back 200% + $250k
- $7,500,001 to $29M can add up to $7.5M to outgoing salary
- Above $29M is limited to 125% + $250k
Nice Memphis Grizzlies ATO playcall for GG Jackson
Using him as a screener/touch screen where they have usually used Ziaire/Roddy this year (or Brandon Clarke in previous years)
Looking at how the Memphis Grizzlies initiate offence for Jaren Jackson Jr.
36.1 USG% since January 13th (post Bane injury) - 2nd in the NBA (min. 5 games)
ATO from Memphis Grizzlies Summer League Game Five
From opening tip, when the play breaks down Kenneth Lofton Jr. is the Memphis Grizzlies Summer League cheat code
This is how the night went, not a lot of great ATO execution from Memphis
After scoring 15 points on Post-Up plays against the Lakers in Game 1 (1.88 PPP) of the series, JJJ did not score more than 2 points in any of the following games (0.6 PPP in Games 2-6)
Here is a help beater from Game 2 with Aldama cutting baseline after the double team
This is a great point by Keith
Here Memphis sets up decoy action for Roddy (against gapping) - Toronto wants Roddy to shoot the 3 (31.2% this season) but Memphis is purposefully initiating action w/ P&R + seal w/ Tillman to set up David Roddy Iso/Go-and-Catch
With Ja Morant's return to FedEx Forum it is notable the Indiana Pacers are
- 2nd worst Isolation defence in the NBA
- 9th worst Post-Up defence
- Commit 2nd most Personal Fouls in the NBA (all via nbadotcom)
Should be a big game for Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Memphis Grizzlies
Memphis Grizzlies vs. Atlanta Hawks
A lot circulated this summer re: using non-shooting bigs in the corner and using them as DHO hubs
Makes sense we'd see Steven Adams here at some point and matches Jenkins' comments about using Adams in more situations to space the floor
Nice solution to having non-shooters on the floor from the NBA last season—putting your non-shooter in the corner, typically the last place you’d want a non-shooter, and using them as a dribble handoff trigger.
Please Coach, I (almost) never complain
JJJ is scoring 1.20 PPP on Post-Up and 1.32 PPP on Iso when defended with a single player
0.563 and 0.800 PPP respectively when doubled - Suns sold out on doubling Post-Ups, it’s in the game plan and only going to get more frequent
This game really highlights why Memphis Grizzlies need to implement more concepts that beat help into JJJ's Post-Ups, he's getting doubled by Phoenix every touch
Last season it took until Jan 23 - it should not last that long this year
GG Jackson is getting to (and finishing at) the rim at a much higher frequency through the first 5 games of the Memphis Hustle Regular Season
Nearly doubled his frequency - 8.2 FGA per game in RS compared to 4.4 FGA per game during the G League Showcase - and +12.8 FG%
Almost forgot this is THE DUNK game - Memphis Grizzlies in January against the Indiana Pacers
Double Drag Rip STS Denied > Empty Side P&R
(Forgive me for the audio choice - no Pete/Brevin)
Continuing season trend we saw last night was bigs guarding Russell Westbrook when they play the Clippers
Memphis Grizzlies used Jaren Jackson Jr. as the primary Westbrook defender on the night (15.70 possessions per nbadotcom) put JJJ in position to be weak-side help defender
Some good stuff from Jordan Goodwin last night in the Memphis Grizzlies win - here he puts his defender in jail then gets the gortat screen from Jemison
