(13) VALERIE O'SULLIVAN was appointed Chief Executive to Cork City Council in October 2024. She is driven by a desire to 'get things done' and 'leave a place better than I found it.'

(12) ANN DOHERTY became the first woman appointed as Chief Executive to Cork City Council in 2014. She served for 10 years, displaying innovation, a calm authority, honesty and humour.

(11) DEIRDRE FORDE is the latest woman to serve as Cork's Lord Mayor, elected in 2022. One of her priorities in office was to further female participation in politics through the Cork City Council Women's Caucus.

(10) MARY SHIELDS was elected Lord Mayor in 2014. She was committed to working to ensure less partisan politics in the Council Chamber.

(9) CATHERINE CLANCY was elected Lord Mayor in 2013. She was the first Labour Party woman to hold the office.

(8) DEIRDRE CLUNE was elected Lord Mayor of Cork in 2005. During that year, Cork celebrated its status as a designated European Capital of Culture.

(7) CHRISSIE AHERNE bridged a gap of 30 years in becoming the first woman since Jenny Dowdall to be elected Lord Mayor of Cork, in July 1989.

(6) JENNY DOWDALL has the distinction of being Cork's first woman Lord Mayor. She was elected as the city's First Citizen in 1959.

(5) ANNE SUTTON made history in January 1920 as the first woman elected to Cork Corporation. She represented the Sinn Féin party.

(4) MARY MacSWINEY was a famous figure in local and national politics. Elected to Dáil Éireann in 1921, she was a major influence on local politics in Cork.

(3) SUSANNE ROUVIERE DAY was a feminist, novelist and playwright. In 1914, she became the first woman to contest a Cork Corporation election. Alas, she missed out by five votes!

(2) ANNA HASLAM was a campaigner for women's rights and a leading figure in the suffragette movement.
