Cleaning up and renovating this long-vacant factory complex in New Britain will enable it to be put back into productive use, attracting business and growing new jobs in the city.

Connecticut was one of 11 states that petitioned the court to decide this question. Now, instead of doing the hard work to clean up the air we breathe, the Trump administration is encouraging more pollution and ignoring the health and well-being of millions of Americans.

In 2007, SCOTUS declared that greenhouse gases are, in fact, air pollution and therefore subject to the Clean Air Act, a landmark law for over half a century that empowers our federal government to protect public health and the environment from harmful emissions.

Rolling back these protections puts our most vulnerable communities at greater risk from the harmful effects of greenhouse gas pollution. Connecticut has a proud, bipartisan history of standing up for environmental safeguards. We cannot sit by while this progress is dismantled.

I’m heartbroken by last night’s shooting in NYC and the loss of four innocent lives, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam. I’m praying for the victims and families, and for all our neighbors in New York. We must put an end to this cycle of gun violence that plagues our country.

Going forward, I believe there is even more that we can do to lower electric bills, and I am encouraged that we can continue this bipartisan, cooperative effort and develop policies that will produce additional savings for consumers.

Using bonding as a means of reducing public benefits charges is one action we can take to provide some savings, but I must stress that this is only one step to make energy more affordable and we need to do more to address the actual costs of generating and delivering electricity.

I’ve scheduled the State Bond Commission to meet next week and vote on the release of $155M in state bond funding that will be used to offset certain public benefits charges on electric bills, delivering consumers some relief on these costs.
