Adding value. CRE, mostly NY, sometimes elsewhere. All gains are unrealized.

I don’t know anyone who celebrates Dubai except for crypto bros who go there to raise money, Pakistani contractors who overnight on their way to visit family, and poasters. Maybe it’s already over for me and NYC, but whatever - not much I can do about it at this point anyway.
Dubai by mid century will likely have the same cultural presence and economic dominance that New York City occupied in the 1960s. It will be seen as the quintessential crossroads of the world, the de facto EMEA hub(usurping London/Paris’s role), and also one of the primary Asian

There’s a lot of tut-tutting about the value of studying the liberal arts, but I think the number of likes and retweets here speak for themselves.

When I was workshopping this deepfake with my AI slop team, we knew the soldier would have to be black and the little girl white - a perfect embodiment of Lacan’s ‘objet petit A’. The flag came later, inspired by Barthes’ concept of the ‘mythological signifier’.
"We were standing outside a restaurant, waiting for our table, when my daughter Macie spotted a soldier walking by. In her quiet, sincere little voice, she said, “Thank you for your service.” He didn’t hear her. She looked up at me, disappointed—but too shy to say it again.

Was the Letitia James prosecution designed in a lab to be the least interesting scandal on earth?

In a rush so I skipped to the last paragraph, but I totally agree
I just met a founder who told me she works 24 hours a day. I’m not joking. She’s taught herself how to lucid dream so she can solve important work problems in her sleep. It’s working though, she recently raised tens of millions of dollars and hired a few dozen people. San

wealth inequality discourse doesn’t seem to understand that modern industrialists have less bearing on your life than any other time in history. the state wants you to hate these people while unelected, unimpeachable, invisible committees deep inside the district tax your soul

So many young people at the opera tonight. The opera is an solid date night deal. Feels elite and special, but tickets aren’t that pricey, like $100. A decent dinner costs more. Telling a date to grab a snack beforehand and meet you at the Met is value investing. Gen Z gets it

But that doesn't mean it's all bullshit. (And for what it's worth, the sommeliers I know have very astute palates and perform very well in blind tastings. They don't always guess correctly, but their rationales for their guesses have an underlying logic that suggests expertise.)

And anyway, everyone knows that drinking a rare bottle of wine among good company is going to offer a better hedonic experience than drinking an 'underrated' cheap bottle alone. Defining 'objectivity' in wine, or watches, or any Veblen good for that matter, is a fool's errand.

It's like comparing a Rolex and a Timex for accuracy. If the Timex is more accurate when compared in a blind head-to-head, does it then follow that the whole institution of fine watchmaking is a sham? Or judging paintings and sculptures based on realism. One could go on.

Arguments like these always miss the point. In matters of taste and positional goods, there is rarely a single baseline objective "quality" to judge against. So why should *all* experts all deem the same blinded wine to be the best? They all have different palates, after all.
There are lots of fun little experiments (like this one), where people are presented with identical wines and different price tags, and their evaluations seem to follow the prices. When you remove the labels, their judgments are much more consistent and sensible.

Bedford L train entrance is whatever the nonprofit version of bare-knuckle capitalism is: A Hasidic Jew shoves a lulav and etrog in your hand. ‘Are you Jewish?’ Two more steps: ‘Hey handsome, you got five minutes for Planned Parenthood?’ Half a block later: ‘Are you Jewish?’

A multi-volume book could be written on this topic. The veneration of PBR during the GFC was effectively ‘cheap beer good’, as below. But the same cultural forces that elevated PBR to prominence (what Greif would call ‘white’ hipsterdom) also ushered in the masscult microbrew.
@GoodGuyGuaranty We can finally admit that bud lights are great?

It's not just the mass affluent consumer surplus that is shrinking; the overproduced elite consumer surplus is also under threat. This has major political implications, but it's visible in a million different ways. Lower volume on slightly more expensive beer is but a symptom.
