My review of Nick Gibb's Reforming Lessons is now available on @YorksBylines: "This book unavoidably feels like a desperate attempt by a long-standing minister to safeguard his legacy from the reality of the education system he left behind" https://t.co/xu8Vqy2oRm

Nick Gibb’s Reforming Lessons aims to defend his ministerial legacy, but instead reads like a desperate attempt to rewrite England’s education failures

The government’s cutting of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) bursaries for music removes a vital gateway for financially challenged musicians to be able to join the music teaching workforce. Music education deserves better. 🎶 #MusicEducation

What is discredited research? Judging by the number of serious critiques of Ofsted's own research papers (including in some cases by those whose own research was erroneously used), presumably they'll be advising against using the discredited research in their own documents!
Exclusive: Ofsted has been accused of 'mission creep' after it emerged new inspections will mark down teacher training providers that allow the use of 'discredited' research – with the watchdog refusing to say what studies would fall into this category https://t.co/wgJF4iDY4f

As pupils return to classrooms, a reminder that they'll be coming to music lessons expecting & hoping to experience music. Talk & writing can help make sense of musical experience but it's not the most important thing. Wishing all music teachers well. Be brave. Put music first.

I have seen frustration from Science of Learning (SoL) proponents when it is pointed out that many things that SoL proposes already were known or done. I understand that; it's never nice to think you are doing something novel, and then it turns out people have been doing it.

@TsuiAllen @DrFautley @haringey_music Music is a statutory part of the curriculum. It's not an extra. 'If they're musical, there's opportunity after school' isn't enough. Developing every pupil's musicality is a statutory curriculum responsibility of every school. And that requires good classroom musuc teachers.

Hesds-up to observers of music lessons. You may not see 'turn and talk' or 'cold calling'. Not all knowledge is verbal-declarative. Other forms of knowledge are available. These may be more relevant to demonstrating musical understanding. @DrFautley @musicmarkuk @MusicTeachers_
