As pupils return to classrooms, a reminder that they'll be coming to music lessons expecting & hoping to experience music. Talk & writing can help make sense of musical experience but it's not the most important thing. Wishing all music teachers well. Be brave. Put music first.

@BBCRadio4 @bbcpaddy makes a broad statement about the 'decline of school music'. It's not a simple issue & not true to say that music has been cut nationally. Individual schools' decisions about timetabling, curriculum & teaching are important factors. A real discussion needed.

Achieving A Level music is a long process, starting in the early years & the result of sustained learning, teaching & support. Congratulations to the class of 2025, their EY/ks1/2/3/4/5/peri teachers, their families and their communities. @ISM_music @musicmarkuk @MusicTeachers_

Over the summer holidays, every pupil & teacher will gain new tacit musical knowledge through TV, radio, online, improvising etc. Do our curriculums recognise, enhance & help make musical understanding of this knowledge? Music education can be a messy but joyous business.

Really sad to hear the news that Raymond Warren - 'Prof' to so many of us - has died. A great composer and music educator. 2025: Professor Raymond Warren (1928-2025) | Department of Music | University of Bristol

A privilege to talk with music teachers @PTIEducation residential @UniOfYork today. A real moment in making the connection to John Paynter's work there fifty years ago. Knowledge of (not about) music at the heart of the curriculum and musical teaching. @Johnfinney8 @GarySpruce1

@DrFautley @musicmarkuk @MusicTeachers_ The first six of the seven NC KS3 Music strands are predominately about non-verbal knowledge. Taught, learned and assessed predominately through music and not words. Pupils make progress by increasing this musical knowledge and understanding over time.

Hesds-up to observers of music lessons. You may not see 'turn and talk' or 'cold calling'. Not all knowledge is verbal-declarative. Other forms of knowledge are available. These may be more relevant to demonstrating musical understanding. @DrFautley @musicmarkuk @MusicTeachers_

I've just read this in the small print of a GCSE Music specification. What unhelpful messages might this be giving to music educators in KS1-3 and to SLT? @DrFautley @GarySpruce1

The AI voice translation used by @BBCNews for the new Pope's first message was appalling. De-human and soulless. It would have been far better to let us hear him speak uninterrupted. I hope that there will be some serious conversations at Broadcasting House. @BBCR4Feedback

ICYMI, last night Sweden chose its song for @Eurovision. 5 weeks of heats, televotes with the whole nation involved & the views of international juries were considered. The winner - the most Scandi & most Eurovision song imaginable. https://t.co/RGLfCLVpEd Marvellous @SVTmelfest

Agree - and just to add to that, the publishers, editors, publishers, rights professionals, publicists, booksellers who bring our books from manuscript to bookshelves. Thank you all.
To all the librarians, teachers, TAs, authors and illustrators up and down the country who are putting their all into making this #WorldBookDay special - even if you only encourage one child to pick up a book today, you’ve made the world a better place ❤️ (illustration by me 🖍️)

First new music (to me) of 2025 and it's an absolute cracker. CD unwrapped this afternoon and it's already been played twice in its entirety. Perfect for contemplating the year past & the year ahead. Thank you, @ghbonello Galargan
