Economists: Let’s assume everyone is a homo economicus, always rational, maximizing utility knowing their budget constraint and prices. Majority in every poll: we are worse off due to inflation. Economists: People don’t get it, it’s just vibes.

New WP: “Monopsony Power and Poverty.” What happens to poverty & public finances when a Walmart Supercenter enters a local labor market? Poverty increases by 2 pp (16%) in 10 years after, driven by declining earnings. Income transfers up, taxes paid down. https://t.co/8jUBNPPCfa

The globe and mail also said Canadas grocery oligopoly is good for customers. So they can fuck right off with their economic analysis.

AfD once more by far the strongest party among those who consider their economic situation as bad in Brandenburg vote. Feels like Germany is running a nation-wide experiment to rigorously demonstrate that austerity really does fuel the extreme right.

Nice work on the cost of minimum lot sizes in Reno. This is not just a Reno problem but quite ubiquitous. It’s difficult to understand the primary policy objective of this, other than to exclude less rich people, the legitimacy of which is increasingly getting questioned.

Key findings from this Reno case study: each additional 10' of mandated frontage adds $60,000 to the cost of a home. Homes on lots of 4k sq. ft. or less (legal in less than 10% of Reno's residential area) were valued at $343k, while those on lots of 5k-7k were $461k.

American egg producers admitted to colluding to fix the price of eggs in court. Kroger, literally days ago, admitted they did effectively the same thing in court. Loblaws & numerous other Canadian companies admitted to doing the same in court. Reality > Theory.

While most of the focus has been on population growth, payrolls in the three industries that employ the most non-permanent residents have been in outright decline over the past year.

It's cool to live in a country where 2 foreign companies committed the dictionary definition of economic terrorism against Canada and all the politicians blamed that attack on Canadians. Imagine Ukraine blaming its own citizens after Russia attacked their power plants.

Employers are using the TFW program for occupations that they barely considered a few years ago. Case in point: administrative assistants. Companies were approved to hire > 3,500 of these positions last year, an increase of 3,090% from 2016.

Our govt made it easier for developers to build fully detached single family homes in new subdivisions while claiming it'll help with density.. The least dense type of housing is fully detached single family homes. So we're allowing more sprawl and calling it density. #PEI 👍

Lie about my pay and then skim 1k off the top until I caught him. Luckily, I live in Canada where its defacto legal to steal money from an employee as long as you own a business, so I had zero recourse. Yay🥳

People support less competition, which reduces pressure to compete for customers, which makes sure prices don't come down/quality doesn't go up. Then these people will blame everyone but themselves for high prices. Mass ignorance to basic market dynamics.

In the United States, food price-fixers go to jail. In Ontario, they get publicly-subsidized booze deals, OHIP dollars for unnecessary “medication reviews,” cancellation of bottle deposit-return program, exclusive Presto concessions … #onpoli #cdnpoli
