I had a cell mate who took a plea bargain of 7 years to life in 1977. “The matrix” available at the time said he’d be paroled in 14 years if he stayed out of trouble. So he took the deal and he stayed out of trouble. 43 years later, he’s still in prison.

This is one of the most important criminal justice papers of the last decade. Counties send 50% fewer kids to prison if they (rather than states) have to foot the bill. Suggests a substantial portion of incarceration rates are because decision-makers are insulated from costs. 1/

In the US, states pay for incarceration but county-level officials (eg, judges) determine sentences Incarceration rates fell dramatically in California after 1996, when a reform shifted the costs of incarceration (but not other responsibilities) from the state to the county.

The US Marshals Service is flying and driving prisoners all over the country without testing for COVID-19. Whistleblowers say it’s a recipe for spreading outbreaks across the entire federal prison system. My latest w/ @keribla @VICENews @MarshallProj: https://t.co/EJTccIxIkp

As a former probation officer I was required to read the conditions of probation or parole at intake to the person on supervision. Most left overwhelmed and confused.

Missed appointments. Moving without permission. Missed curfew. Here are some common probation and parole violations that send thousands of people back to jail each year—and hold them back from success. What are some unfair violations that you or a loved one has faced?

The feds operating in Portland and elsewhere without identifying insignia, credentials, or affiliation—and refusing to state their legal authority or basis for detaining people—are secret police. That some of you support this particular deployment does not alter their status.

Some news from @Harvard_Law, announced today: Over the coming year, I will be launching a new institute at Harvard, the Program on Mass Incarceration, which will use litigation, research, and advocacy to address our country's untenable and unjust approach to incarceration.

#SB288 helps to remove some of these barriers by allowing nonviolent offenders to appeal for restricted access to their criminal record, and allows more serious offenders to petition for the same relief once they have gone a few years without any further criminal activity.

These needless barriers to #reentry make it difficult or virtually impossible for returning citizens to find housing, secure a job, or even get a driver's license. Read about some of these #collateralconsequences, common throughout the U.S., here:

Withholding occupational licenses solely on the basis of a criminal record prevents employment & encourages recidivism, especially when the crime is unrelated to the job. TY @RepDelozier, @RepHarris, @SenatorDiSanto @senjudyschwank for your efforts on smart #CJReform with #SB637.
