Researchers @DebAzrael and @susan_t_parker found that gun theft rates increased 42% in large urban areas, while declining 22% in rural areas. In addition, gun theft rates from cars increased 31%, while gun thefts from burglaries declined 40%:

Stolen guns may have a role in violent crime, but data on gun thefts is limited. A report prepared for CCJ’s Crime Trends Working Group examines the data on reported incidents of gun theft, exploring trends across various jurisdictions, levels of urbanization, & w/in 16 cities.
