I am thrilled to share the news that @GuerrillaMarkt has won the Sharon Stephens Prize. Hopefully the book helps to sound an alarm about the risks posed by marketing to democracy, and to foster nuanced discussions about demobilization and remobilization in Colombia.
It is with great pleasure that we announce the ethnography, Guerrilla Marketing: Counterinsurgency and Capitalism in Colombia, by Alexander Fattal as the 2019 winner of the American Ethnological Society’s Sharon Stephens Prize. Congratulations, Dr. Fattal!

"No estamos huyendo de la discusión política", dice Becassino, mentira: huyen. Su campaña es otra: hacen video de @ingrodolfohdez diciendo "sí", otro diciendo "no", y luego, a partir envíos por Facebook y WhatsApp a votantes geoposicionados, envían lo que la persona quieren oír🧵

Last day of screening! "Limbo" addresses how transitional justice in Colombia is geared toward disseminating carefully framed images. @FattAlx eschews prismatic clarity for hazy projections emanating from his camera obscura. https://t.co/NQmLgndvqJ

Exporting soldiers has become a vast industry in Colombia, fueled by the country’s long U.S.-backed war, limited opportunity at home and growing demand abroad.

FARC rebels used to chain their kidnap victims in the jungle until they received ransom. Now tourists pay ex-guerrillas hundreds of dollars to take them hiking and whitewater rafting there.

Both UN Human Rights and Shakira are denouncing the horrific violence of the Colombian military against its own people. I am retweeting @Shakira b/c I suspect she amplifies more. @POTUS, one phone call and short statement would make all the difference.
Es inaceptable que una madre pierda su único hijo a causa de la brutalidad. Y que a otras 18 personas se les arrebaten sus vidas en una protesta pacífica. (1/3)

I just had an incredible encounter. Our doorbell rang, so I opened the window to look below to the front stoop. When I saw a man delivering food, I called out to him, letting him know it must be for our neighbors downstairs. This, so far, is normal.

these idiots have waited years to turn their online civil war era fetish message boards into a real thing and the government not flagging those as domestic terrorism threats in any serious way is completely to blame

As the American public watches a segment of the Republican Party try to smack down the will of the people today, it should hold this moment as motivation to fight the cancer on our democracy that is right wing extremism and the Republican Party that enables it.

We've heard a lot about the "War on Christmas," but Alex Fattal's book demonstrates how the Colombian state has weaponized Christmas as part of its counterinsurgency. Read our forum on Guerrilla Marketing here:

1/2 As someone who got bumped from a cable news program to advocate for my brother’s freedom for this story, I have an special interest. There’s so much more to say about this reality spectacle gone haywire, justice, and it’s undoing.
