Why do train boys lie? Only maglev tops that speed in service. Typical HSR peaks at 200 mph in service. Average speeds are more like 150 mph (when you include stops, acceleration, etc.).
If we could demo to the average American what it feels like to take a train at 225 mph between major cities, I think the demand for high-speed rail from the electorate would be too much for Congress to ignore.

Actually, highways receive 5x more federal subsidies than transit. And a lot of that money comes from the general fund, not the gas tax. If government spending equals "communism", highways are the most communist infrastructure in America.
