Building a more just & equitable DC education system by centering the voices of diverse educators, creating a culture of shared leadership & improving retention
Washington, DC
Joined July 2017
WATCH: Educators across our entire city and demanding the DC Council step up and #FundCommunitySchools in the FY 2026 budget! At a time when the social safety net is at risk, one of the most important programs we have to service students and families is #CommunitySchools.

@EmpowerEdDC was proud to sign on to a letter to @MayorBowser this morning condemning the positive sentiments towards the federal intrusion into DC that she expressed at last week's press conference and demanding leaders take a different path- with the people & against Trump.

Happy Labor Day! Labor unions built this country and continue to be on the front lines of defending the rights of workers and building a more just union every single day. Thank you to all of DC's Labor Unions, our allies in the fight today and every day.

Adding to this: teachers across D.C. say students are skipping school (or asking to tune in remotely) out of fear of law enforcement. Truancy is already one of the biggest factors behind crime here — and this only makes it worse.
President Trump says he wants to make D.C. safe again. But by flooding the city with ICE agents – and largely forcing MPD to work with them – immigrants are now too scared to call local police if they witness a crime or are victims of one, residents and advocates tell me.

Absolutely critical read with the perspective of so many powerful DC #TeacherVoices!
Testing. Truancy. Burnout. And now, federal raids. For @The51st, D.C. teachers shared what’s weighing on them as the year begins. One summed it up: “Sobering.” https://t.co/MFjgIKCrUF

DC is making progress, but we could be making so much more. Read this article and listen to the voices of educators about how over-testing, attendance, burnout and turnover and more are contributing to opportunity gaps and what we can do about it! @DCPSChancellor @WTUTeacher

Happy Back to School, DC! Your teachers are excited to welcome you, teach you, advocate for you and make sure school is a safe and joyful place for you this year. Welcome back!!

We appreciate the protection of student data. But the commitment from @dcpublicschools regarding SROs on non cooperation with ICE and immigration enforcement should be “WILL NOT” and not “not at this time”. This is not reassuring families. @DCPSChancellor @WTUTeacher
Sign of the times: @dcpublicschools has had to clarify that @DCPoliceDept officers who work at schools will not be assisting ICE with immigration enforcement, even as MPD as a whole has been providing more assistance in general. (Still, note the use of, “At this time.”)

Proud of continued progress made by our students and the work of our educators and also impatient for more. The path to continued progress is listening to and empowering those in our schools to scale what is working- built support for & take down barriers to educators to do so.

Unfortunately for the 2nd straight year the Mayor has excluded @DCSBOE representatives-the ones you elect to represent you on key edu issues & advocate for communities and schools- from the annual Back to School guide. You can find ALL education leaders on our website here:

Good time for the DC Council & Mayor to have an emergency press conference, & announce emergency public meetings in neighborhoods throughout DC to inform the public about what Trump's takeover of mpd means for the District Alot of residents are probably really confused right now

@EmpowerEdDC team joining @freedcproject_ this morning to stand up for the full autonomy of DC! DC belongs to the people of DC and we won’t back down in the face of an authoritarian bully who can’t read crime statistics.

System leaders have not been operating in good faith on this, and our system lacks checks and balances for families with a legitimate grievance. This is how total mayoral control of schools works. We need to truly empower the @DCSBOE to act on the concerns families bring to them!
The latest …. DCPS said the kids who turned 5 before the Sept 30 cut off & did an extra year of pre K should be tested to see if they should be forced to skip kindergarten The kids failed the test DC is sending them to first grade anyway

Everything DC says it wants to accomplish in education gets harder when families struggle to meet basic needs. The federal government is retreating, now is the time to step up for one another.
Who are we in this moment? Will we seize the chance to confront rising inequality and extend lifelines to DC families and children? We know inequality and growth are linked. Will we choose a path toward equitable growth, or will we complicity leave many behind?

I’ve spent 5 years @DCSBOE pushing for structured #literacy reforms in DC & now we’re close. A budget subtitle to make these reforms real is moving forward, thanks to @CMBrookePinto & @ChmnMendelson. Please ask your Councilmembers to support the literacy subtitle.

New: The future of DC's well-regarded program delivering pay raises for childcare workers is (once again!) uncertain, thanks to Bowser's budget. The pay equity fund runs out of money after 2026 in her proposal. And lawmakers expect they won't find the funding to change that.

Thank you for your openness and support for common sense reforms to DC education governance! The proposed legislation- allowing @DCSBOE to initiate rather than just approve policy and give SBOE better data access isn't an overhaul, but just common sense improvement to governance!
Being open-minded requires you to re-evaluate your own positions in light of new facts. I have been very disappointed with the lack of oversight and unwillingness to hold @dcpublicschools leadership accountable for its failure of notice & retaliation against families. (1/5)
