DC can lead by making literacy a K-12 priority, not just K-3. Expanding @OSSEDC's Early Literacy Task Force’s work into middle & high school would answer the call we heard in testimony last night and give all students critical #literacy tools.

🎯 Use regular assessments to group students for targeted small-group instruction

📖 Some adolescents still need decoding/fluency support -- don’t assume it’s “too late”

📚 Build knowledge + vocab: Comprehension grows when students have the background to make sense of what they’re reading

🔑 Teach disciplinary literacy: Reading in science isn’t the same as reading in history. Every content teacher should help students tackle texts in their field.
