I definitely have to say that so far my favorite thing in 2019 has been looking out the window of my flight and being able to see the stars from 36,000 feet... Space still kind of freaks me out with its scale but damn it's beautiful

I tire of this debate, but as a teacher: It matters for young people. They need to see the words, the construction of sentences. Most of my students who cannot spell tell me they always listen to audio if they "read" at all.

Christopher Columbus was so infamously cruel that the Spanish crown paid to send someone to Hispaniola in 1500 to investigate. This resulted in a 48-page report detailing the testimony of two dozen witnesses, and the investigator himself, of how Columbus had mismanaged the
Christopher Columbus is the ultimate IQ test. You immediately know that someone is a retarded halfwit if they start screeching some nonsense about how Columbus was a genocidal maniac or whatever. Intelligent students of history understand that he is one of the great men of

“Capitalism breeds innovation,” and the innovation is dynamically price gouging people based on how much they need something.
Walmart is rolling out digital price tags at all of its stores. At the same time, the corporate giant just secured a patent for "dynamically and automatically updating item prices.” Plus another patent for using machine learning to predict demand and recommend prices.

I feel like every time I go to the farmers market I see a dozen different couples that defy all the false dating narratives online… the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen holding hands with a guy a foot shorter than her, a freakish male model gym specimen who targets muscles
In spaces with a persistent social context I have seen people fall in love who are not looksmatched many times, the issue is that dating apps fragment that context and people don't know the personality of the other person

Looking at the world and our dependence on fossil fuels reminds me of when I was doing all my research for To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. Digging into the math of energy production completely and utterly convinced me that the only path forward for humanity is to just bite the bullet

Me and my fiancee keep arguing abuut whether to read our son Percy Jackson or Eragon first 😂
One of the great joys of parenthood is reading to my children. So far, my 9 yo & I have read: Hobbit Where the Red Fern Grows Wingfeather Saga (1-4) Harry Potter (1-7) Now, we're reading Eragon by @paolini, one of my all-time favorites.

100% agreed. life is so beautiful when you leave your house and do things in public. I feel like it’s so draining to have everything be digital. video stores, movie theaters, film festivals, screenings, all those things help build community and human connection. streaming doesn’t
Ex-Blockbuster employee here. And I mean it with 100% sincerity that the world would be a better place if we shut down all streaming services, re-opened Blockbusters and video stores worldwide, and shoved people back out into the world to find and enjoy their entertainment.

You know what really bugs me these days? We can't own anything. Everything is a subscription service, like literally everything. You can't buy Microsoft Office, you have to purchase a subscription for a year. You literally have to pay for everything FOREVER. Isn't anyone else

yep. most good opportunities, friendships, and solutions to your problems, come from “knowing a guy who knows a guy” and you can’t get to that point if the “weight” of good-morning-small-talk is too much for you 😭
only weirdos think being polite to strangers is unnecessary emotional labor because it’s actually the social lubrication that sets your life on easy mode.

My friends, my family, and my loved ones, are all trying to talk me out of taking the two year old to the punk/shoegaze show happening at the skatepark this afternoon, so in return I am teaching the toddler to say “poser” and “narc”
