As someone who believes in the European project, these past few days have been emotionally challenging. I feel disillusioned and ashamed of the EU institutions. Human rights are supposed to underpin our values but yet, the hypocrisy in who deserves them is blatant to see.
Something just doesn't sit right with me in how British people can obtain Irish citizenship through a grandparent while literal Irish people in the North had to fight for citizenship rights. Brexit has cheapened Irish citizenship from something precious to a tool for convenience.
My mum was a young teenage mum that escaped domestic abuse. I've lived in a hostel, New Lodge flats, Divis & in Moyard. All council housing. The odds were stacked against me. I'll certainly not apologize for taking up space in the "professional class" because I'm a nationalist.

Some of the radical socialist feminists involved in the Easter Rising. Know their names & deeds 🇮🇪
Apparently saying "North of Ireland", "the North", or "6 counties" is sectarian. Place names hold meaning & "Northern Ireland" reminds many of us of the injustice inflicted upon this island. We're entitled to reclaim some sense of empowerment by using terms we feel okay with.
The writing has been on the wall for a while now but seeing it visually like this reinforces just how much we are on the verge of seismic change. How I wish my granda was alive to see this. Going from a gerrymandered state to one where his grandchildren could live under a UI.
“Nuking Gaza is an option. They can go to Ireland or deserts. Gaza has no right to exist. Anyone waving a 🇵🇸 flag shouldn’t be allowed to continue living on the face of the earth.” The Israeli gov are psychopaths & I'm proud that we're pissing them off. 🇮🇪
170,000 in Ulster died during the Great Hunger - both poor Catholics and Protestants - but yet, this never gets mentioned in historical discourse of the 6 counties, its as though the history of this island was also partitioned.

"Fenian: Blend of feinne or fianna, the name of a legendary band of Irish warriors." Fenian itself it not derogatory but has been warped into a sectarian slur. I call myself a feminist fenian because it describes my identity & politics. There's power in reclaiming these words.
Claiming that the rise of SF is due to dissatisfaction with the DUP is too simplistic. SF is a masterclass in how to do hope-based communications. They're actually engaged in communities through local activism and have leadership that is inclusive, relatable & likeable. 1/5
Just want to put it out there that any political party with an ounce of sense would struggle to work with the DUP - it is not a specific SF characteristic, and the sooner this is recognised & the lazy "bad as each other" narrative is ditched, the better we'd all be for it.
Thank you to everyone who shared this today. Unfortunately it isn't good news. Deep down I think we already knew since this morning. I will be muting this tweet and the other. I would appreciate if people could refrain from making commentary.
I usually don't put private family matters on here but I know Twitter can be very powerful in terms of its reach. Jamie-Lee's car was found in Dundrod with all her belongings in it. If you have seen her, please contact the Woodbourne Police at 101.
Seeing a lot of political reps saying the hatred displayed on bonfires makes them sad and/or disappointed. This happens every year. Enough of the platitudes and do something about it. Here's two not so new ideas: 1) regulate bonfires and 2) bring in hate crime legislation.
There's a moral imperative on media to start questioning loyalist rhetoric on why they think they're under siege, who are they supposedly "defending" themselves from and who is the target of their treats. The intentional obscurity around the narrative needs challenged.
So let me get this straight...the DUP pushed for Biden's visit to not be an official state visit but at the same time, their former leader is annoyed Biden didn't carry out protocols relating to a state visit?!
Dame Arlene Foster has questioned whether the US President delivered a major snub to the United Kingdom by not flying the Union Flag on his official car – but opting to fly the Irish tricolour.
Comparing the removal of a flag from an isolated field that was placed there to antagonize those at a GAA match to the verbal sectarian abuse hurled at the residence of a young mum is not the take. They're not even remotely comparable.
Thinking about a man I never got a chance to meet today. Sometimes I would wonder what he was like as a person & the type of granda he would have been. 50 yrs ago he was killed by the UVF while on his postal rounds. His murder left my granny a widow with 4 children. 1/2
Fionnan's behaviour is a telltale sign of how rattled the establishment is from the public response to lifting the eviction ban and wider housing policy. Spice Bag, as an artist, basically did his job well. Art and art appreciation should never be censored.

I think they've deleted this ridiculous post on their Facebook. I hope they've come to see how ridiculous this whole thing is and actually apologize to the staff member. City center bars in Belfast have always held policies against flags/emblems being allowed in and rightly so.
Some positive developments coming from Belgium including explicit condemnation of Israel's collective punishment of Gaza, support for the ICC and a new bill to ban trade with settlements in occupied territories. The EU needs more of this leadership.
De Sutter is the Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium. To my knowledge, her call for sanctions to be taken against Israel makes her the most senior politician in the EU to do so. Here's hoping more will do the right thing and follow suit.
As someone who comes from a working-class CNR background, there is nothing worse than middle-class Catholics/Irish Nationalists looking down their nose on my community. You just know that the everyday realities of deprivation & sectarianism hardly touched them.
1/If you're wondering why so many young people in West Belfast know rebel songs, it is simple really...oral history. Love or hate them, but the Wolfe Tones (& others such as the Flying Column) play a role in many households in passing down history through music.
Breaking - Israeli FM: "Today, I am sending a sharp message to Ireland and Norway: Israel will not go over this in silence. I have just ordered the return of the Israeli ambassadors from Dublin and Oslo to Israel for further consultations in Jerusalem,"

I genuinely don't know why any right minded person would willingly go on to this show. The way Matthew was treated here is a disgrace and exemplifies the media bias in this place.
The housing crisis is a stepping stone for many young people in finding their way to republican culture as a form of anti-establishment sentiment...and here's Karen clutching her pearls from her "big house" that is rooted in colonial history. There's levels of irony to this.
This has to be one of the most out of touch analysis I've ever heard from the 26c. Not only does it misrepresent the aspirations of those seeking a new Ireland it also shows a lack of understanding of what life is like in the 6c regarding cultures of entitlement & supremacy.
Women are not incubators to be used for some numbers game in politics. But in a place like NI where inflammatory comments against catholics "multiplying like vermin" were commonplace, journalists would be best checking their biases before publishing.
As an occupant of one of those maternity wards in 1998 I think I can safely say I wasn’t getting that C Section for Ireland.
A pretty shocking statement
For those who don't get the significance of this, look at it this way, this state was built on a system that oppressed & disempowered Irish Nationalists in so many ways. We were never supposed to vote nevermind hold the highest elected office. This is a win for all our people.
For the first time in the 101-year history of the six county state, an Irish Republican party is the most popular party at the ballot box and can lay claim to its highest political office.
🧵1/4 The fanboying from a particular journalist over the most toxic broadcaster to grace our airwaves these past 10 yrs really is something to behold. The media is not above receiving genuine & constructive critique. However, wealth & threats of defamation are used to quash it.
So now its official - the Twitter account has been made. For months myself & others have been discussing the need to mainstream the debate on Irish unity in the EU bubble. We'll be launching more soon, incl. our mission & plans for 2023. So follow us

1/Those with partitionist views basically want to move the goalposts by making unionist consent on a UI mandatory even though it isn't legally required.
Also, if we used that criterion in 1998, we probably wouldn't have the GFA.
Little old me yesterday. Fever was insane & I couldn't talk for being out of breath. Pain in my lungs was intense. Currently back home in a sleepy haze of tremadol. Can conclude that the Belgian state is really trying to keep the stats low as they wouldn't test me.
Flemish news just did a segment on the GFA by following up with an Orangeman they interviewed 25 yrs ago. Not only were his views the same, the lies he spewed had to be corrected afterward. The expert said "protestants are not happy they had to give up privileges for Catholics".
Those commenting their outrage over the Kneecap mural are either: a) 40+ years of age; b) are not even from West Belfast let alone the Falls area; and c) are not from a working class nationalist/republican background. This really does paint a picture in itself.
Some in this place seem to forget that there's such a thing as intergenerational privilege. Not many from my community had it. We were encouraged to educate ourselves so that we'd have a better life than that of our parents. Getting out of poverty really isn't some sinister plot.
When men are attacked in public (usually by other men) it isn't because of their gender. When women are attacked in public by men, it usually is because of their gender. So step out of your male privilege for a minute & listen to what women are saying about gender based violence.
My granda was murdered by the UVF and it always feels like a punch in the gut when I see loyalist paramilitaries treated as legitimate advocacy groups. The only thing they should be "consulted" on is the process which outlines their disbandment.
Dissidents don't want a UI. If they did, they would recognize that we're now closer to achieving a UI through social/political means. Their main objective is violence because it fuels a toxic sense of masculinity that gives them purpose. This needs to be systematically addressed.
Can media outlets please stop giving oxygen to unelected loyalist paramilitaries to assert their ridiculous demands?! The normalisation of them as a credible advocacy group is not only insulting to victims of their violence but shows how broken our institutions are.
Those claiming this was just the behaviour of the individuals within that video are wrong. Hatred of the "other" does not exist within a vacuum. It relies on social structures to be nurtured as a norm. What really sustains it though are those who turn a blind eye to this fact.
Love this response. Creating your own space for political advocacy rather than conforming to existing structures and practices is a power move that doesn't get enough recognition in discourse.

This whole exchange is very interesting. The observations made by Charles on Sinn Féin's growth ("all that skill and ingenuity") while also looking at Michelle for some sort of confirmation as to who Jeffrey was. Looking forward to seeing how the media pundits spin this. 💅
My granny's house is a treasure trove for West Belfast social history. Here is a letter that a British soldier wrote to her out of working class solidarity for the Moyard Demolition Campaign.
Actually scundered for loyalists & even unionist politicians using "but the ra" whataboutry to excuse their community's sectarian behaviour last night. Peace happened 20+ years ago. Stop deflecting to the past, own your shit & do better. Its the only way this place will progress.
I've always believed that if the DUP were not in the picture (or were in a more limited role), Stormont would probably function alright. This is why NI's culture of false equivalence bothers me, it fails to address the root causes of our dysfunctionality & lets them off the hook.
On the topic of Arlene Foster going on the LateLate - the problem isn't that she's going on as a unionist per se but 1) the timing before the election when SF are doing well in the polls 2)RTE not giving ML airtime 3) Turbidy is a partitionist & will likely lap her rhetoric up.
Theres an emerging pattern where male journalists ask senior female SF leaders silly loaded questions that they know will cause a sectarian Twitter war of narratives on the past/identity/beliefs. Ever notice that these types of questions rarely get directed to unionist leaders?

1) I've sometimes used the term "free state privilege" in regards to the south to try to conceptualize the often taken for granted benefits of having been born down south compared to their northern compatriots.
“It [the South] has never come to terms with its own citizens living in the North, whatever their religion or identity, and abandoned then to the whims of an apartheid state, systemic poverty, discrimination and violence.”

Sinéad O'Connor used her platform to speak out against abuse in the Catholic church despite knowing she would be vilified for doing so. It is only in recent years Ireland has come to appreciate and love this brave brilliant woman. She represented the best of us. Rest in Power 💚
When making points about how this place still privileges unionism over others, I often get met with arguments that it isn't true. This judgement proves my point. Polling stations should be neutral and like it or not, the union jack flag is not a neutral symbol in this place.
For many Irish Nationalists, "making NI work" is about just making the most of a bad situation. We will do our best for our people in the short term but ultimately we know we can do & have better. Skimming over Westminster's role in perpetuating UK inequalities is disingenuous.
What disturbs me most about the song is that someone wrote it & thought it was worth celebrating the murder of a young woman all because she was an Irish Nationalist. Those in that video (mostly men) sang the words like it is a common anthem. Like femicide & sectarianism is OK.
There's a cohort of anon Celtic/Republican accounts on here that are in the habit of harassing women online because they hold a different political opinion. Green fleggers that are a stain on our community. Can't deal with equality & inclusion, then you're not a republican. 💅
11 years gone today but what a lot of people don't know is the 10 days before then - it was hell on earth for my family. Time is a great healer but there are days when it just hits you hard no matter how long it has been. 1/2
This demonstrates perfectly the sum of our value as a people to Britain's Westminster. Our lives, our pain, our ability to seek justice - it means nothing in comparison to protecting the British security apparatus.
What's also interesting is the almost admission here that
@BBCNolan
do not have any monitoring procedures to keep track of the diversity of its guest commentators. I would expect better from a broadcaster that is publicly funded to know the importance of balanced representation.
@MichealMartinTD
You know accountability will not be forthcoming. The only way forward is for individual EU member states to start a chain reaction for sanctions. You know what the people of Ireland want you to do. Start by expelling the Israeli ambassador.
Even though we may climb the mobility ladder, it doesn't mean we abandon the politics we grew up with. Many of us enter these spaces that weren't designed for us to not only have a better life but to open the space further for those who are traditionally underrepresented.
Just caught up with the

All of this Allison 👏👏👏
It's one of the reasons why I'm so vocal about being from West Belfast. There's an ingrained belief and/or unconscious biases that people from our background aren't supposed to be in certain spaces. Sadly, those biases are still socially accepted.
If this was dissidents & happening in a Nationalist area, there would be tonnes of media coverage & the police response would be more heavy handed. What little is being said about what's going on (& by whom) in N'ards highlights the ongoing sanitisation of loyalist paramilitaries.
It's as if the police,

Between the BBC censoring Gary Linekar for his mild criticism of govt anti-immigration policy and now cancelling the broadcasting of an environmental nature programme for fear of right-wing backlash, the BBC isn't even pretending to be impartial anymore.
And that's really the crux of the matter. Media, politics, civil society, academia, business, etc. They hate that we've been able to use their system to assert our voices and help shape the society we want.

Recently, there has been a continual attempt to excuse bigotry committed by loyalists. This is nothing new. It happened during Holy Cross too. 20 years on & the same vile behaviour is carried out. When is this finally going to be called out & dealt with in a systemic way?

There's a way to talk about shifting demographics where it doesn't play into old tropes & stereotypes about a community. If multiple sources (many of whom are women from journalism & civil society) are pointing out the same issue, then perhaps the issue does lie with your bias?

Maybe its time we have an honest conversation on the fact that loyalist paramilitary groups still exist 20+ yrs post GFA? Maybe we should stop funneling them "community" money & insist on their disbanding to give the ordinary people in PUL communities a real chance to progress?
I see we're back to the point where those who aspire to Irish unity are being told to pipe down because unionism's sense of security trumps everything else. I also see we're back to how people from the CNR community in positions of power and influence are a problem for them.
Just a reminder that many of us vote based on policies that derive from ideologies such as feminism & socialism. Reducing political parties to just green/orange is disingenuous & is insulting to voters. Its not my problem that the "left" of the spectrum all seem to be "green".
