Hawley voted for the biggest-ever Medicaid cut, yet pretending he brought home the bacon. He called the requirement for Medicaid expansion enrollees to face out-of-pocket costs up to 5% of income a "hidden tax on the working poor," and he voted for it to start in Oct 2028.

Sen Josh Hawley called Medicaid cuts "morally wrong" & "politically suicidal." He said the "big beautiful bill" would eventually force rural hospitals to close. He called for a tax policy that is more fair to workers and families than corporations. So why'd he vote for this?

I fear things could get far worse for today's children (and their well-being in adulthood) after Trump admin's cuts to NIH funding, rollback of childhood vaccination, and disruptions to the data collection needed to monitor trends and develop effective interventions.

New JAMA study (Forrest et al) shows a troubling decline in children's' well-being of over the past decade+, whether measured by chronic conditions, mortality, mental health, or more. Kids are nearly 2x as likely to die in the US compared to OECD peers.

Pretty rich coming from an admin that's driven measles cases to a record high and dismissed taking health coverage from ~16 million Americans as "immaterial." Medicaid coverage enables people to fill Rx or go to the hospital before it's too late. That's literally life or death.

By doing so, the Trump admin side-steps engaging on OBBBA's substance, which is unpopular. They've been relying on unrealistic modeling assumptions and math gimmicks to hide adding $3.4T to the debt and to justify slashing Medicaid and food assistance for low-income Americans.

We're in a weaker spot for a future recession. OBBBA makes biggest cuts ever to Medicaid & SNAP, programs that are automatic stabilizers. As incomes fall, more people qualify for health coverage and food assistance, helping them and our economy recover.

Economic uncertainty abounds. Will Trump’s “liberation day” tariffs activate on July 9? Those tariffs mean consumers face higher costs (~$2500). They also hit both U.S. businesses that rely on imports and U.S. exporters that suffer retaliatory measures.
