Regardless of whether there’s a perfect location to serve its own unsheltered residents, the truth is people are homeless and cold in Davis County, and we need to take responsibility for our neighbors. That’s how we show that we really are “all for helping those less fortunate.”.

But in SLC, I live 3 blocks from a shelter, 1 block from treatment housing, and less than a mile from a church that WILL be hosting people for Code Blue. And I would be proud — and grateful! — if the OTHER church in my neighborhood offered to bring even more people in.

Maybe Fruit Heights isn't the ideal place for people to access services. I grew up in Davis Co., and connectivity is truly lacking re: transit and good ol’ fashioned suburban sprawl. You need a car to get around, which is why this proposal included busing folks to the church.

By the numbers: Fruit Heights residents are turning away 65 people (likely an undercount), according to the 2024 Point In Time Count data. And of those:.-23 have mental illness.-23 are survivors of domestic violence.-17 are chronically homeless.

If residents are pissed about opening a church to shelter people from the 18-degree cold, which is the temp it has to be to call a Code Blue, then I'm not sure they ARE "all for helping those less fortunate.".

NIMBYism literally leaving unsheltered Utahns out in the cold. The arguments are the same ones we hear over and over again re: siting shelters/services/housing: "I am all for helping those less fortunate, BUT . ".
