🚨 Just published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters! In collaboration with Luyuan and @EliasHeimisson, we explored how poroelasticity affects rupture propagation across fault stepovers and its impact on earthquake hazards. Link:

Back in grad school, I always thought we should tackle the dike trajectories problem in a biaxial stress field more rigorously. Although I never took it very far, I'm thrilled to see @LBlackstone_ has done an outstanding job with it!.

We challenge the common assumption that fluid flow from a fault into the surrounding bulk can be disregarded due to permeability contrasts. Our findings reveal that, despite fairly high permeability contrasts, fluids do not travel far without leaking into the bulk.

Oh no! It appears that the magmatic dike extends underneath the lava-protection barriers and is feeding a small fissure eruption at the edge of town. Hopefully, the eruption will slow down and concentrate more centrally away from town.

The lava is flowing alongside a barrier that was being created precisely for this purpose to divert the flow away from the greenhouse. The question is if it will hold or the lava will break through or get around.

Although fascinating, the situation is quite serious with infrastructure and houses at risk. We can see on this webcam the lava flowing very close to a large greenhouse. At the current time man-made barriers seem to be diverting the flow
