One of the most difficult tasks a teacher is faced with is trying to balance holding all students to high expectations, while also remaining flexible and attuned to their individual needs.

I wonder if this would be effective before the students see the test. For example, "You have 5 minutes to review and talk about anything you think could be on the test."

I like the idea of "experimenting" by shifting routines to try to find new ways to keep staff engaged and motivated.

One of the most difficult aspects of a school culture to measure is kindness. We often don't have data to point to, but staff and students can recognize the feeling and it makes a world of difference when it is present.

You could even frame the misconception as the teacher's mistake during a think aloud. For example, "At first, I thought that I should solve the problem by doing ____. Why didn't that work?"

Teaching is a science and an art. Many teachers do one or the other well, but it is difficult to find a teacher who can do both.

The beginning of the school year presents us with the opportunity to establish routines and relationships. Perhaps one of the most important expectations that we can set as teachers is "I will try to be my best self for you each and every day."

Change can refer to helping students learn something completely new, as well as strengthening a skill they already possess to make it faster or apply to more scenarios

Teaching is just changing what kids know and can do. When I visit lessons, I often wonder if change is the goal. The planned activities are more like intelligence tests than ones that require cognitive and behavioral change. All weโ€™re surfacing is what students can already do.

Reflecting after 6 weeks gives you the flexibility to adjust your arrangement, routines, etc. if they are not working for students. Great idea!

Whether you've started your school year already or are still getting set up, I'd recommend 2 things: 1๏ธโƒฃ name/write down what you want your classroom to look/feel like in the best of worlds 2๏ธโƒฃ about six weeks into the school yearโ€”pause and reflect on how reality matches up
