Happy Juneteenth! Today we celebrate the end of slavery in the US. Today we reflect on the progress we've made as a nation, but recognize that there is still work to be done towards true equality and justice for all. Let's continue to educate ourselves and advocate for change!

Fire Facts from a Boreal 🔥 Ecologist to help you understand what is really going on in Canada. Fire Fact 1: The term “forest fire” is misleading in boreal regions. Also burning are peatlands and permafrost ecosystems, which store LOTS of ancient carbon. 1/
Helicopter view of the current forest fire in Canada approximately 10 hectares of trees are in flames !!! Pray for everyone’s safety fighting these fires!

🌿 Key Highlights 3)The additional carbon stock attributed to protected areas is roughly equivalent to one year of annual global fossil fuel emissions. Our research underscores the critical role of protected areas in avoiding carbon emissions and maintaining carbon sequestration

🌿 Key Highlights 2) 9.65 Gt (+/- 0.88) of additional carbon is attributed to the protected area status. These higher stocks result from avoided emissions from deforestation in protected areas compared to unprotected forests, as well as enhanced growth and avoided degradation.

🌿 Key Highlights: 1) Protected areas contain a total aboveground carbon stock of 61.43 Gt (+/- 0.31), approximately 26% of all mapped terrestrial woody carbon. This highlights the crucial role of protected areas in safeguarding carbon reserves and mitigating climate change.

🌳 Exciting News! Our paper "Quantifying the Global Impact of Protected Areas on Forest Carbon Stocks" in Nature Communications has just been published. 🌍 📄 https://t.co/47gTjLR2wN 🔍 In this study, we quantify the global impact of protected areas on aboveground carbon stocks.

Thrilled that our #GEDI protected area paper is now online in @NatureComms. Global-scale analysis quantifies how much carbon would have been lost without PAs… ~10Gt C, or one year of annual fossil fuel emissions.
