Honestly, I think this is a major part of the vicious cycle of disease(s) in the US. People are either too stressed to sleep well or too vigorously chasing debauchery that they have negligible awareness of how critical recovery is.

A good system of real-world fighting should have maximum alternatives to be able to make some of it functional even when injured. You may not be able to do all the techniques, but you'll have some working options. If it only works for the most athletic, it's just sport.

@DrMarkCheng i have a torn ucl joint in thumb past repair, too old of an injury they say, and bad arthritis can the combat aspect of tai chi still work with no thumb? i understand pushhands well, but not the application of the actual grip needed to perform thoughts?

@teortaxesTex Confucians = people are born good, music and poetry plus filial piety, you don’t need laws. Legalists = this is BS! People are born bad. Law, Laws, Laws. Legalists kicked Confucian’s asses in wars. But had trouble ruling afterwards.

@DrMarkCheng I cannot achieve “deep sleep” consistently for more than 1 hour. Last night was out late serving students breakfast from 9-11 PM but here is last 6 nights of data. Disc issues in lumbar spine worsen the longer I am in bed. Better sleep with a Celebrex.

Most important question... Are you sleeping enough & deeply enough? Next question... Are you training to tax your pain endurance levels or training to widen your pain free ROM? Inadequate sleep de-rails allllll sorts of weight-loss endeavors. Poor ROM = pain & inflammation

I think the one thing that we could do to change our world for the better would be to educate our children to be forward thinking. The inability of generations of people to be cognizant of the long game has made us selfish, reactive, myopic, & proudly ignorant.
