More investment in preschool provision needed, for sure. But this is really disappointingly really un child focused.l, ‘bend the children to fit the system’ analysis of the issue. Also no critical thought about what ‘evidence’ is, & who decides the measures.
Today we’re publishing the ninth in our series of joint reports with @ChildoftheNort1 - setting out an evidence-based plan to tackle the crisis in preschool provision. Thousands of children are not ‘school ready’ when they arrive for Reception year.

🚨 super important report 🚨 There is robust quantitative and qualitative data on this…can we now please have reform?.
New @NuffieldFound report: 20 years of data show for-profit providers in adult & children's social care have grown despite underperforming public/third sector. Early analysis suggests this worsens geographical disparity and harms overall care. Link:

Hundreds of people came to this and I’m chuffed to see the strength of feeling about doing better for care and YJ experienced children & young people. It was recorded, so happy to share this as I know there were many on the waiting list. Just email hello@cypher-research.co.uk.
Our free online seminar on 2 October will explore two aspects of a recent research project commissioned by HMI Probation which seeks to understand the supervision of care-experienced children by Youth Justice Services. For details & booking see RT plse.

This is fascinating from a policy analysis perspective, I’m not at all convinced it will do these things and delivery will be nightmare, but I’m itching to see how it turns out in a few years.
We promised change, it’s beginning and education is right at the heart of it. Breakfast clubs will boost attendance and attainment. They’ll mean better work choices for parents and better life chances for children. We’re ushering in a new era of child centred government.

We also found evidence of this in relation to care and youth justice experienced children. Really important to note the backgrounds of many of these children involve control & abuse making the experience deprivation of liberty extremely harrowing
This powerful report highlights the issue of children deprived of their liberty in unregistered placements including holiday lets. Our research shows that in the last 12 months, 1,249 children from England and Wales have been subject to a deprivation of liberty (DoL).

Shalhoub-Kevorkian’s work on ‘unchilding’ has been some of the most profound on my thinking. That more sociologists of childhood/youth aren’t speaking up - about any of what’s happening in Palestine - is a deep indictment of the state of academia.
The disgraceful legacy of the Hebrew University and Israeli academia:. Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian is not the only victim of the wartime witch hunt in academe. – Daniel Blatman.
