Physicians are suffering at alarming rates. So I wrote a book about it. I have had the privilege of caring for hundreds of physicians. Our work together provides me with insights that I hope to pass on to other docs going through tough times.

A lack of confidence is often misinterpreted as a lack of competence. Especially in medicine. Challenge your imposter syndrome. Lifelong learning is an integral part of medicine. You did not make it this far by sheer luck. You belong.

We overestimate what we can accomplish in a short period of time. We underestimate what we can accomplish in a long period of time. Beware of the valley of disappointment when results are not meeting your expectations. Every setback is a valuable lesson along your journey.

In college, I compared myself to college students. In medical school, I compared myself to medical students. Same thing in residency. I eventually figured out that social comparisons don’t matter. Everyone is climbing their own mountain. Focusing on others only distracts you

@DrDimitrios Beware of a n y o n e preaching or correcting or shaming or demanding - or all of the above - and worst are those who offer “immediate solutions” without asking more questions and without truly listening - and that takes maturity on both the speaker and the addressee (seeker)

Beware of the person preaching how to live a happy life. The human condition is defined by a range of emotions. Happiness is not a constant state. Rather, we experience moments of happiness. Unrealistic expectations about happiness make these moments harder to come by.

You are more than your resume. You are the legacy of the work you've done, the lives you've impacted, the ripple effect of your actions and the meaningful work you've championed. Your true value lies in the impact you've made and the legacy that you leave behind.

In hustle cultures, burnout is a badge of honor. Working beyond your limits is idealized. In toxic cultures, burnout is a sign of weakness. You are blamed for being emotionally depleted. Medicine is both. No wonder over 45% of physicians suffer from burnout.

The job of your brain is not to make you happy. Its job is to help you survive by looking for what can go wrong. Evolution occurs slowly but the environment changes rapidly. Think about how much the world has changed in your lifetime. To have anxiety is to be human.

You will not find long term happiness by fulfilling every pleasure or achieving every goal. The satisfaction from pleasure and success are short-lived. You are more likely to find happiness in gratitude and mindfulness. Appreciating the little things makes a big difference.

You might decide to bite your tongue and stay silent for valid reasons. It may not be the right time or place to say what needs to be said. Just don’t suppress your feelings for too long. Emotional suppression is associated with mortality, including death from cancer.

Here are three reasons why curiosity plays a major role keeping you in present: 1. Curiosity is a hybrid state that sits between cognition and feeling. 2. It is also a drive state for information. 3. Just practice curiosity and you’ll know it.

@DrDimitrios I agree with you but I also think it depends on context. Wandering minds also drive creativity and flights of the imagination if used constructively.

Your loved ones will approach you with their problems. Don’t fall for the trap of immediately offering solutions. Take the time to validate how they feel about their situation. Give them the space to come up with their own solutions. We need to be seen, heard and understood.

Medicine idealizes perfectionism. Truth is medicine is far from perfect. We don’t diagnose with 100% accuracy. Our interventions don’t always work. The medications we prescribe can come with side effects. Instead of perfection, medicine should promote humility. We need to
