Congrats to my former @Harvard bandmate @CarolynBertozzi on her @NobelPrize in chemistry! We won the Ivy League Battle of the Bands in 1986 with our rockin’ group ‘Bored Of Education’, with her on keyboards & me in spandex.

I spent 27 days shooting over 2 million photos of the moon to capture how it dances in our sky. This is the most detailed “Lunation” I’ve ever captured. #astrophotography #space #opteam

Thinking about biological collections lately I'm reminded of the time that somehow at age 4, I got a personal tour of the @UCBerkeley entomology collection (Essig?) from a kind scientist (anybody know who?!). Asked my parents how on earth THAT happened, and it turns out...🤯

In referring to experiments that nicely wrap up scientific papers, I’ve often heard vaguely homicidal descriptors like “killer experiment” or “silver bullet,” or phrases like “put a nail in the coffin.” Does anyone have suggestions for more life-affirming expressions one can use?

Had a great lab meeting today: we discussed the phenomenal documentary Picture A Scientist. Highly recommend! To paraphrase Dr. Burks, science is a human enterprise and is both brilliant and biased. Thanks to @UWMedicine @UWGME for hosting screenings over the past 2 weekends.

#TIL that if you want to name a bacterium, you can’t just declare the thing named & be done with it. First comes a lot of lab work. Last comes ...the Latin grammarians. Fun story to write w/@fredhutch’s David Fredricks & @DrSujathaS

The first-known organism to be named for Fred Hutch, the bacterium Megasphaera hutchinsoni can be found in some women with bacterial vaginosis and is known to boost the risk of contracting HIV.

Cassini contentedly slipped into the clouds, its mission complete. But just after the final signal sent, its sensors detected, too late, a faint trace of buttercream. In its last moments Cassini discovered a truth that would remain hidden from the outside universe: Saturn is cake

This past year has highlighted like never before how awesome our scientific institutions are, yet how ineffective we have been at educating the public on scientific subjects, with real life consequences... what are the solutions to bridge this gap? #scicomm
