Here's your wake up call if you have a trailer with a slow intro and lots of logos on your Steam page. This post is full of people who skip past the trailers to click on the screenshots because it's quicker and they assume the trailer won't show gameplay.

When I first learned about this browsing behavior I had a mini crisis thinking: "OH NO, MY EDITING CRAFT, MY ART!!!" After that I chilled out and tried to figure out ways to (mostly) start my trailers with footage that immediately looks like gameplay.

So I try to make sure the trailer that goes up on the Steam page has gameplay from the very first frame (there are admittedly, some exceptions) Think of this as an opportunity to both stand out and improve the browsing experience for players!

@fullbright A VR game I worked on didn’t have time to make me a free cam, so I strapped my Oculus to a Doraemon plush, put it on some boxes and blankets on my IKEA chair, re-centered the headset position, and pushed/pulled the chair across my carpet to make the smooth camera moves.

I'm not saying, abandon slow intros entirely; they have their place. But based on what I've read and observed, people aren't exactly using Steam as their preferred way to watch a bunch of game trailers. They're browsing; they're digitally window shopping.

Game trailer editing tip: Try to make the gameplay you show proportional to their significance in the game. For example, if your game is 60% combat, 20% puzzles and 20% platforming, ROUGHLY use those the ratios for the footage in the trailer.

You can even make a slightly modified version of your trailer just for Steam! For example: A Space for the Unbound's launch trailer has a mini teaser on both Steam and social media. If you watch this trailer on YouTube it doesn't have the mini-teaser.

If you want more about why indie game trailers should generally NOT take inspiration from AAA game trailers, here's a longer post of mine. tl;dr AAA has advantages you do not. Bigger audience who are partially satiated just seeing shiny new graphics.

This trailer uses dialogue which might be written just for the trailer, but even if it isn't, it's functionally a trailer narrator talking directly to the audience. This is always a dangerous and fine line to walk between engaging the audience or turning them off entirely

The other problem is when the narrator is SUPER HYPE but you're a "cold" audience who hasn't had time to warm up to the game in any way. Think of awkward E3s where presenters awkwardly say something like "This is the most amazing game of all time" before you've seen any footage.

I tried making the WORST TRAILER EVER for Firewatch using all the flaws I could think of. Since I don't actually have THAT much free time I cut this w/ the official trailers. The only way I could make it worse is to make it longer with shoddy capture. How did I do? 🤣

Let's talk about "show, don't tell" in game trailers. Title cards are a shortcut to explain what is happening on screen. The most common problem I see is when title cards explain the plainly obvious, or deprive the audience the opportunity to figure it out on their own.

Think of a trailer narrator like a sales person standing next to the game (or in front of it) Are they providing support to the game and its visuals by giving necessary context to understand it? Or are they obscuring the game in their efforts to tell you how cool it is?

A trailer is like a first date, but with sales-y narrator it's a first date where one of the parents is there extolling your date's virtues. Even if the date speaks for themselves you won't take them at their word they're great. You'll decide for yourself based on observation.

Also, the thing about the talking cuff is just wasted time since it doesn't even talk in the spot and it's not a novel story or character hook. This is ESPECIALLY weird because the delivery of the line makes it sound like our minds should be as blown as hers.

The other problem is the overlayed text brings extra attention to the dialogue (this is standard for digital spots). The graphics put emphasis on the weakest part. Based on comments people are interested in the gameplay! But the dialogue turns them off.

The thing this trailer does is cover these basics: - Transported to another world - There are dragons - Talking cuff - You have magic abilities - Kill monsters - Quippy protagonist? This is does not stand out. There's no specificity.

The other problem is the tone of the dialogue doesn't feel like it matches the visuals. It might work in the game, but here it feels disconnected. Someone in a recent stream of mine described this phenomena well as two different conversations. One is going to dominate.

Also, I know these spots are made knowing most views will be with the video muted, but the music is basically treated like background noise which makes the spot extra flat. The soundtrack is carried by the dialogue, which is the weakest part.

The cool thing about this cut is the voiceover works better just because the music and editing raise the energy of the whole piece. In the original it's the voiceover is going HARD, but the editing and GFX aren't backing it up. In this cut they go all in on the direction.

The most successful hype narrator trailers I've seen are usually for comedic effect or something so over the top it actually does get kind of get you into it. I think the narrator for Broforce is a good example

Neat tool to help game capture! I found these “precision rings” at Daiso which add resistance to thumbsticks. So far they’re perfect for fine control when doing gradual and incremental movements either with a character or camera!

By the way, if you like "isekai" genre stories where the protagonist is whisked away to a magical world, my favorite is The Twelve Kingdoms. I think it has some of the best character arcs I've seen in any media ever not just anime.

This is one of the best slides in @Olima 's GDC talk. If you're an unknown indie, get to the good part FAST! Starting a game trailer like AAA do (logos, slow environment shots) is like getting on stage, grabbing the mic, and giving your life story instead of just playing music.

Tooting my own horn, but the BattleBlock Theater Steam trailer worked in this way mostly because the narrator and their humor is part of the game, and also I think the absurdity of getting this hype about a port makes it work.

This is huge! If you have a game on Steam, go into the backend to classify each of your trailers, and make sure the first two trailers in the carousel show gameplay! All the other trailers are for the hardcore fans at best, and should stay in the back of the carousel.

Never feel you need to apologize for your game or tout its commonalities because you're worried people won't like what makes it unique. Not all game hooks are successful or desired, but give people *just* enough to know the desired genre conventions, then move onto the hooks!

To fix up this spot I'd just remove the dialogue and graphics, and let the gameplay shine. If the in-game music isn't good for the trailer, find a cue with a similar vibe but more trailer-y and make it feel punchy and fun. Like this Anger Foot trailer!

I think I finally got through to someone who felt burned by game trailers which differed from the shipped game by saying: Early AAA game trailers are the devs trying to guess what their baby will look like when they’re 18. Does this feel like an accurate metaphor? 🤔
