Saddened to hear about Stephen Hawking’s death. :( He was a brilliant person, but also had a good sense of humor. Loved seeing him pop on shows like Futurama and The Simpsons. Descanse en paz.
I was added to the show in season 2 and didn’t know what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect it to be my second longest tenured show. It’s been a true pleasure!

Season 6 finale just days away, I have some bittersweet news to share: Season 7 will be our last. We are eternally grateful to WB & CW for always allowing us to tell our story the way we want to & to wrap the show on our terms. What an incredible ride this has been!
This is unbelievably awesome! It tells you a lot about what sounds an English speaker thinks are important, and how they interpret their spelling system.
For the curious, in Paul’s vision of his mother, what’s written on her face is the Litany Against Fear in the Fremen language (see image). You can see the translation here:

Tonight's the last episode of
#GameOfThrones
, and if you'll allow, I'd like to reflect. The whole things started for me ten years ago on September 9th—the first day of the Dothraki competition. But the real story starts before that. (Longish thread.)

Today is the last day of
#The100
. I didn’t know what to expect when I joined this show, since I was coming on in season 2. I certainly didn’t expect it to be my second longest show and definitely wouldn’t have guessed the conlang I created would have more fans than my others. 1/4
For those curious about the writing in the background of
#ShadowAndBone
, this is the Ravkan alphabet. I ended up translating a LOT of signage this season!
#conlang
I saw it was announced that I’m doing
#conlang
work for
#ShadowAndBone
. This is a dream come true, as I’ve known
@LBardugo
for...wow, 8 years now, and am so excited that her work is going to reach an even wider audience. Can’t wait!
Dear
@TaikaWaititi
,
If Star Wars happens, PLEASE let us have some real created languages in it. You don’t have to hire me! I’ve got a list a mile long of language creators who would sell Tolkien’s bones for a chance to create a language in the Star Wars universe.
Sincerely,
Me
I can’t explain the A, but this is so amazing. G is voiced and T is voiceless in veGeTables, but since it’s consecutive consonants, the /t/ is unaspirated—something English speakers perceive as D. The /dʒ/ devoices next to a voiceless sound—hence CH. so the voicing flips!
Wow. The
#HighValyrian
@duolingo
now has 1 million active learners. Not ever: ACTIVE. That's wild. Kirimvose to all those dropping in and learning what a noun case is! If you haven't checked it out, it's here (and it's but one of MANY offerings!):
I want to take you back to a simpler time! July 30, 2019. The world was a different place then, and
@quothalinguist
and I were translating the dialogue for the last episode of season 1 of
@Motherland
. Come join us and remember the Before Times!

If you’re trans, this is going to be a sucky day to be on the internet. :( It must be awful to have to defend your very existence every single time someone somewhere decides they’re mildly inconvenienced by it. My heart is with you. Take care of yourself. <3
A fan from France asked me to write a dialogue in Trigedasleng between Lexa and Indra to accompany this picture. Check it out!

I've far, far exceeded my wildest dreams already—both in life, and as a language creator. Now it's my turn to give back. And it never would have happened had not Dave and Dan decided that gibberish is not okay. San athchomari yerea. Kirimvose. Love and respect. <3
For
#ShadowAndBone
fans: Below are the Kerch writing and number systems. There’s no language behind it yet, but I created the writing system with an eye to fleshing out the language some day. :) (Also, if you want to know how to spell Milo in Kerch, there you go.)

Also happy to announce that this is one of three shows I was able to hire someone on for. I worked with
@thalmach
on the Fjerdan language. Can’t wait for you to hear it!
My 3 year old just made a wild linguistic analogy. We passed a school, and I explained that it was the school that her grandma used to go to:
M: I used to go to school.
Me: *amused* You used to?
M: Yeah. When I’m bigger.
So she got the habitual part but not the PAST part. O.O
Every so often, the phonology of one’s
#conlang
allows one to do something truly spectacular. Today, I introduce you to a new High Valyrian adjective: suez “stuck". Here it is in a sentence, properly declined: Lōgor suerior vasīr issa. “The boat is still stuck."
I hope everyone enjoys
#RayaAndTheLastDragon
today! I’ve been working on it in one way or another for the past nine years. You can see some of the Neyu language in there:
#Sisu
(quick-water),
#Namaari
(sacrifice),
#Kumandra
(source of the dragon). It came together well!
#conlang
Tbh I would have liked Grey Worm and Missandei to have talked to each other in Valyrian, but what can you do? (Btw this was the last episode of the show I *didn’t* work on. From here on out you’re stuck with me!)
Excited to be going back to
@Cal
to watch the premiere of
#GameOfThrones
with the linguistics club I was a part of when I was a student. That’s where I started creating languages. Delightful to come full circle. :)
My daughter (4yo) just finished a HUGE project, and I’m too proud not to share! She’s been learning to write her letters, and as a project she decided to write the name of one
@Pokemon
per letter (A-Z) and draw their picture. Here they are!
There are a number of linguists right now who are decrying the horrors of “cancel culture” and wailing over the hurt feelings of a world-famous, wildly successful pop linguist.
Meanwhile, we still have concentration camps in the United States—in the midst of a pandemic. (1/3)
A lot of people have been asking me about the use of Xhosa (as opposed to a conlang) for the Wakandan language in
#BlackPanther
. The thing to remember is it wasn’t their decision—or, rather, it wasn’t their idea to use *Xhosa* for Wakandan.
Bit of a surreal experience as I’ve just come to realize there is a girl in my daughter’s Zoom ASL class named Khaleesi. I didn’t create the word, of course, but I certainly did create the pronunciation for it which no one uses…
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from history, as well as countless stories, from Aladdin to Game of Thrones, it’s this: You can’t force people to love you. You can force them to pay attention to you, sure, to submit to you, but that’s not the same thing as love.
Just realizing I have an hour and a half stream of me translating and recording lines for the scuttled Game of Thrones sequel. They’re all in Andalosi (what would become the Common Tongue). I wonder if I can publish that video at some point in time...
FYI there’s a big difference between “creating a harsh language” and “creating a language that sounds harsh to Americans due to cultural stereotyping”. The latter is simple; the former impossible.
October 30, 2009 I got the Dothraki job for HBO’s Game of Thrones. 40 years before that—October 30, 1969—Paul Frommer, creator of the Na’vi language from Avatar, met his husband John for the very first time, and they’ve now been together for 50 years. Congratulations!
Btw this is also why you don’t take an existing language, move some letters around, and call it an orcish language, dwarven language, etc. This is why places like
@Wizards
should hire conlangers.

Today
@cwthe100
comes back at 9/8C! This was a wild season to work on. My thanks to
@JRothenbergTV
for continuing to find ways to let me tag along. :) Gyon op!

Hey
@muse
! What’s the deal?! You using my language without even telling me?! I’d translate each of your autobiographies into High Valyrian for free if you asked me too!!!
Many have heard of Esperanto. Not as many have heard of Afrihili, but they should have. Afrihili was a pan-African auxlang created by K. A. Kumi Attobrah of Ghana in 1970.
I’m looking to work with a female language creator on an upcoming project on a freelance basis. If you’re interested, I’m opening DMs; please DM me a link to your conlang work. SEE NEXT TWEET FOR CRUCIAL INFO (character limit)!!!

Today I’m 40. The day started off right (way better than my 36th), but I’m also in better shape today than I was 4 years ago. It’s going to sound crazy, but I’ve lost 30 pounds since September of last year, and I owe it in large part to doing a 10 minute workout every night. 1/?
Oh, geez, it’s Christmas...
Hey! I have two books for language lovers: The Art of Language Invention (teen+) and Create Your Own Secret Language (middle grade+). They make good Christmas presents! You can buy them wherever books are sold. It’s probably not too late!

Leigh and I met at WorldCon in Reno at my Dothraki presentation just before S&B came out. I made her pronounce a long ass Dothraki line. lol We’ve been friends ever since. :)
