Maine 4th graders posted the worst declines in NAEP reading scores of any state from 2019 to 2024. So I wrote a piece in the @PressHerald about what we can do about it:

Other states have turned their results around with science-based reading instruction. We can too.

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨"The reading skills of American high school seniors are the worst they have been in three decades, according to new federal testing data ... In math, 12th graders had the lowest performance since 2005."
nytimes.com
High school seniors had the worst reading scores since 1992 on a national test, a loss probably related to increases in screen time and the pandemic. Their math scores fell as well.

As always, I am rooting for @DmoWriter! Give this guy a medal
The through line in Moore’s writing is Northern California with a healthy dose of pro baseball in Oakland (Athletics or otherwise). His piece nominated for the 2024 Jenkins Medal was a definitive chronicle the A’s and their fans. Portfolio and clips at https://t.co/A0URo5bk8g

🫠 No tests, no problems I guess. Students are all doing great—we can all go home! "If we stop testing America’s students, we’ll have fewer bad headlines about how poorly they’re doing." Appreciated this column from Jessica Grose ⬇️⬇️

Trump wants to give power back to the states. Some states are lowering standards.

🤑🤑Shout out to @WomensGameMIB for bringing this new report to my attention (among other important things of course): Revenue from women’s sports to top $2.3B in 2025. The projection more than triples the 2023 total (!!!)

.@BostonGlobe editorial board: "The fractious debate leading up to the board’s rejection provides a bracing study in the intransigence and sometimes pretzel logic of the state’s education establishment toward public charter schools, even very good ones."

State officials, including Maura Healey’s education secretary, ignored the Lynn parents clamoring for a better education for their children.

Wow: "In 2023, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey, about a quarter of Americans reported eating all of their meals alone the previous day, an increase of 53 percent since 2003."

"Democrats can’t be the party that believes in equity as a core principle while simultaneously being complacent about math scores still languishing below pre-pandemic levels and reading scores hitting their lowest in more than 30 years."

"...not a single state has a robust law that puts any meaningful constraints on the enrollment practices of magnet schools...This stands in marked contrast with charter school laws..." From @timderoche in @EducationNext ⬇️

State laws, professional standards should put guardrails on magnet enrollment practices

**BREAKING** from @lrj417. NAEP was supposed to be off-limits. Now, it looks like DOGE has abruptly cancelled the next test, which was set to start in March. @The74
the74million.org
One prominent researcher said the flip-flop offers ‘the first direct evidence that executive actions have weakened NAEP.’

.@ChadAldeman: The separation between the higher- and lower-performing students in the United States has grown faster than anywhere else in the world over the last decade, and there’s no signs yet of that slowing down https://t.co/QAqiB4dFk5

The LA Times accepted an op-ed opposing RFK Jr — then at the last second, editors cut out multiple lines expressing opposition and gave it a pro-RFK Jr. headline, and its billionaire owner posted it here. No one should feel confident submitting op-eds there anymore.
I am the author of this OpEd, which was given a misleading title and from which key lines were cut—lines that made very clear that RFK Jr is dangerously ignorant, has absolutely no business near HHS, and is effectively a mass murderer in waiting.
