Time for some personal news... After two years
@weareiowa5news
, this is my last week. I moved to Iowa without knowing a soul and am unfortunately leaving some incredible people behind. Des Moines grew on me quickly.
Stay tuned for what's next!
This morning's storms have left a nasty hodograph behind...
Afternoon storms will start firing between 1 & 2p mainly in W or NW IA. Expecting all hazards.

I’m excited to share I’m joining the talented team
@WNCN
in Raleigh!
Covering the enemy ACC territory (Go Canes
@univmiami
) of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill is a big change from the Iowa cornfields, but let’s roll! 🌀
Mario Cristobal continues to assemble an impressive staff at
@CanesFootball
. Sources tell ESPN that Charlie Strong, the former Texas, Louisville and USF head coach, is finalizing a deal to coach LBs at The U. Strong has deep recruiting ties in South Florida.
A
#hurricane
is likely to form by Wednesday in the Gulf of Mexico.
Where it makes landfall is unclear. It primarily depends on where the upper-level cut-off low will be over the MS Valley/Plains.
These are some of the hardest features to predict, especially 4+ days out.
Planning on
#traveling
anywhere in the NE quadrant of the US on Thurs/Fri?
Don't. Move those plans to Wed/Sat.
This is trending into a blockbuster

#Beryl
has made landfall at 4a CT near

Here are the expected gusts with Beryl across
#Houston
and other areas this morning. Widespread power outages and major flooding are both possible through the midday hours.
Part 3 of Madison County Strong: One Year Later is the most emotional. Here’s the first minute and a half.
Today marks 1 year since the Winterset EF4; the costliest
#tornado
across the country in 2022.
Later today I’ll share previews of the final two parts.
Not sure how long this camera on
#Sanibel
Island will hang on.
Surge already up to near the stop sign. 45 minutes ago, the base of the sign was visible.
Well last night was pretty fun!
The
@Local5Weather
team won an Upper Midwest regional Emmy for our spring severe weather special ‘Iowa’s Forces of Nature’.
I’m so damn proud to work with this incredible, most accurate, and now Emmy Winning team!
A very difficult forecast for the
#severewx
threat in
#iawx
Tues.
Rn I lean more towards the RRFS solution mainly b/c of the NAM and HRRR’s outlier thermos.
Any storm that can sustain itself in the warm sector has the kinematics to support a long-track/sig tor.
The risk for tornadoes has been increased for tomorrow's severe weather threat in eastern
#iawx
.
The storms will be moving >50 MPH, so the right flank side of each tornado won't need much to achieve EF2+ strength, hence the large significant area (black stripes).
Hurricane hunters flying through

#HurricaneIan
likely won't be upgraded to a Category 5, but that is irrelevant. Catastrophic impacts are occurring in SW

The Red Flag Warning has been expanded and now includes the entire state of

Do NOT burn anything outside today, and if you smoke cigarettes, dispose of them properly!
Well it’s January… But it’s
#iawx
!!!
3CAPE is just bonkers as the warm sector surges ⬆️ Mon.
These thermos are a JOKE for the heart of winter. Need a perfect setup for 🌪️ in JANUARY.
Is this it? 🤷♂️
#staytuned
Pretty big discrepancy for Monday:
Low placement, CAPE, & how big the warm sector gets (HR puts much of central
#iawx
@ 50° dews @ 18z)
Trends will be interesting to watch esp. tomorrow .
The 12z run of the RRFS (rapid refresh forecast system) paints a highly concerning scenario for explosive supercell development along/just W of I-35 between 2:30 and 4pm.
All modes of
#severe
expected.

One week from today marks 1 year since the costliest
#tornado
in the U.S. in 2022 — the
#Winterset
EF4.
Starting Wednesday, meet the heroes and survivors of that night, in a 5-part series culminating on March 5.
#iawx
We’re less than three days out from the first substantial
#severewx
threat of the year for
#iawx
.
Trends in models over the past ~day have been significant. We’ll look at those later.
First, our in-house IBM GRAF model is in range thru Fri AM. It shows some impressive thermos.
A great afternoon to catch up with
@barnescar614
&
@madisonemc
in Bevington!
Sheriff Jason and Dio are two of the best people I’ve ever met. The people of Madison County are very lucky to have them!
Here in Ames today talking

The problem? It's in the middle of a
#flood
plain. What hydrologists and the athletic department is saying tonight on

Euro and GFS ensembles painting very different pictures for Thursday's 𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 snowstorm.
These Colorado lows can be
#iawx
's most prolific snow producers. Will be interesting to watch.
I think we need to remember that tornadoes have only happened in January in
#iawx
on one (1!) day in recorded history.
If this setup happens in March or April this is an entirely different ballgame tomorrow
Lost in the cornfields for today's story...
Tar Spot will have an impact on yields this year... Potentially significant.
Unpacking it tonight on
@weareiowa5news
@ChrisGloninger
I'm sorry viewers are having this kind of reaction Chris. In this market especially, the impacts of climate change can be quieter, but incredibly devastating down the line. We have an important job to convey the science of what's happening.
Let’s skip tomorrow’s “event” (let’s be real, very small chance of seeing a 🌪️, and if there is it’ll be brief) and look at the Wed-Thu snow event
NAM is in view & it shows an impressive co-location of lift & saturation in the DGZ.
Temps will be close to 32 though…
An incredibly difficult forecast for Saturday.
It's a high ceiling, low floor setup, meaning the volatility in the atmosphere is there, but it all depends on what happens in the morning.
The more sun we see before noon, the more severe afternoon storms will be.
#iawx
Buying into the HRRR solution at this point for tomorrow PM’s severe. NAM’s stratus bias is making it unusable.
Expecting rapid t-storm development between 5-7p with all hazards esp. near triple point and as LLJ kicks up near sunset. Wind/hail risk takes over after 9p.
#iawx
Today is ENTIRELY nowcasting.
None of the 12z CAMs have a picture that looks anything like this.
More analysis in a bit, but I'm smelling a big time boom or bust day.
#iawx
Hard to believe the Winterset EF4 was two years ago today.
It was the deadliest tornado in Iowa since the Parkersburg EF5 in 2008 packing winds of 170 MPH.
@madisonemc
.
@RDUAirport
responding to a small plane crash with 2 on board, 1 had to be extricated.
The airport is closed to inbound flights until at least 11:30.
#RDU
This is a very bad situation for Tulsa… Doppler velocities 100+ mph with storm motion.
Shades of August 10, 2020 considering the population about to feel the brunt.
