Political theorist of power, subjectivity, and 'Madness' at Sacramento State. Feminist, democratic theorist, pet person, music & food enthusiast. Tweets my own.
Theory friends and colleagues: who is in your canon (not necessarily "the" canon)? What are the books that transformed you? That you keep returning to? That you just can't quit? That you think more people should read? That you think we should read more slowly or lovingly?
Today I woke up still a little in shock, but the paper trail tells me it's real.
This fall, I'll be starting a new position as an Assistant Professor of Identity Politics at Sacramento State University.
COVID is bringing many uncertainties and may lead to the loss of this opportunity. But,
successes are rare and I’ve decided to celebrate mine while I can. So:
I’ve accepted an offer to be a Visiting Lecturer of Politics for 2 years at Mount Holyoke College!
Trying to decompress this weekend and finding it hard to let go of my thoughts about work, especially as I wait on some academic news.
@AcademicChatter
community, how do you de-stress on the weekends?
Advice for keeping work at work?
It happened to me: I got COVID at APSA.
Currently doing fine, grateful to be vaccinated, and staying home to rest and limit the spread to others. If you're looking for me and not getting a response, well this is why.
I’m getting more into podcasts as a way for students to connect with material beyond the textbook and shore up my own exposure to news, new research, etc. Do you have a favorite podcast app? What are your recs for shows and players?

We did it!
Coming soon to an issue of SIGNS: “‘This Is a Work for the Mothers": Strategic Maternalism against the Far Right,” by
@LornaBracewell
and Anna Daily! 🎉🎉🎉
If you’re still on the fence about whether to attend the WPSA maybe this will convince you. The feminist theory pre-conference workshop will feature Sara Rushing’s The Virtues of Vulnerability with discussing comments by yours truly! (1/)
I pulled out of APSA for a myriad of reasons weeks ago, but if someone needs a conference presentation or the like and wants to withdraw, I’m positive that the Contemporary Feminist Political Theory workshop can be an excellent virtual venue. Send me an email or DM to get started
1st observations of living in CA:
1. Strangers are nice
2. The sunshine is not overrated
3. When your landlord drops the ball on cleaning your new rental he makes it up by putting in new floors and giving you a rent reduction???
4. They really do offer avocado on anything
This is the hardest advice to give students but it’s so important. I love being an academic, but at the end of the day, academia will just never love me back. You have to be able to draw a line, you must be able to walk away.
Please don’t go get a PhD because you want to be a professor. The chances are so slim & the cost so high. Get a PhD because you want to learn research skills & study something deeply.
Coming all the way to APSA was worth it just for the laughs, kind gestures, and pep talks. This job market candidate needed some support and she's gotten it.
Friends! I am feeling mentally wiped out from the job market right now. Those who are on the market now and those who have landed, how do/did you stay sane? How did you shelter from the constant stream of stress?

My fall seminar, "Agency, Solidarity, and Action" is finally coming together and it is gonna be soooooo good. I cannot wait to read all of these texts with my students!
@mattbencole
Give in class activities that have them read and look at the text then talk about it. Make it very structured, direct them to specific pages and passages, give them things to find, and encourage them to talk to each other to test their knowledge.
"It feels amazing to be part of this historic moment." The 32 U.S. Rhodes scholars for 2022 include 22 women, the largest number of women ever selected for the scholarship in one year, the Rhodes Trust announced.
It’s a feelings day as I say goodbye to
@mtholyoke
. For the last two years, it’s been a shelter. I’ll miss my friends, my students, and this beautiful campus.
Sat down to "catch up on email real quick" and two hours later I am crawling out of an administrative hole. How's your second day of the semester going?
#firstyearTT
"Thrilled" does not begin to capture how I feel right now. As my partner noted, I have been working towards this goal for over 12 years and it's finally here.
I am excited, relieved, grateful, and humbled to enter this next stage of my career.
Two students told me how much they enjoyed my class today and one yesterday.
A colleague told me a student we both have told him she loves my class.
Two students struggling with personal stuff, impacting their classwork, talked with me about the reading.
It was a good day.
The one good thing about still being in lockdown:
I will not have to encounter a stranger tomorrow or anytime soon who, upon hearing I'm a political scientist, will respond, "Wow! Crazy times to study/teach politics, huh?"
In the lead up to each and every time that I move, I convince myself that packing will be a zen, mundane, repetitive process. Something I can mindlessly do at the end of the day.
Reader, it is far from this. It is never this!
There's a special joy that comes from your students with disabilities telling you that your course policies and classroom practices support their needs.
Today, I'm feeling grateful for the students and colleagues who showed me the way to this place.
I went to Mount Holyoke's 2022 commencement to connect with students and barely saw any I knew.
I ended up getting quality time with my wonderful colleagues and honestly, after giving so much to students these last two years, this may have been what I *actually* needed.
Going to the Theory & Event party is just watching a bunch of people you love and/or respect shout at each other over drinks but it’s not stressful, it’s great.
#wpsa23
Echoing the offer of many, I would be pleased to give feedback to colleagues (grad students and beyond) who will be missing out on feedback because they’ve pulled out of APSA. Feminist theory, democratic theory, madness and disability—these are my things. Get at me!
If you are a grad/ postdoc/ untenured political theorist who is wavering about
#APSA
because you are afraid of missing out on comments, send me your paper. I will give you comments. I specialize in Marx & Marxism, HPT, republicanism, ancient Greek thought.
Grad students! Early career PhDs! International folks who are first-time APSA attendees! The contemporary feminist political theory VC is hosting an event on how to make the most of APSA this coming Tuesday at 3:30ET/12:30PT.
What do you want to know before you go? 1/?
Me: I am going to grade today!
Also me: Okay okay okay, for real I will get started and grade just 3 essays.
Also also me: Whew, that half of an essay just penciled in a tentative grade for really wore me out. Better check Twitter!
I got here with the support of so many mentors, advisors, friends, colleagues, students, and family members. Truly, it took a village and my village is damn good one.
I hope to see all of you out in sunny California for a visit, soon.
bro in library to girl: "do you know about this guy Foucault? he's like a continental philosopher from the sixties and he's obsessed with sex and thinks everything is a prison"
7 days, 3000 miles, and one 3-hour traffic jam later: we have arrived in Sacramento.
Bonus: we were greeted by a lovely package from
@davidhughes_phd
. It’s a drop dead delicious 18-year scotch. Cheers!
There has been so much change on top of all of the stress and grief of these years in the pandemic, that it's been hard to feel truly celebratory about being off the market. Seeing so many friends at APSA who are happy for me absolutely warmed my soul. Thank you, pals. <3
Got my copy! I loved being a part of this project from start to finish. My forever thanks to
@Nick_Carnes_
@gorenlj
and all of the contributors for this experience.
Feminism today simply would not be the same without bell hooks. Rest in power to a beautiful writer and one of the most important thinkers of our time.
A person I am close to (in academia) is a survivor of an over 10-year stalking ordeal. This is a great thread to learn more about this surprisingly common issue.
#medievaltwitter
As my bio says, I am MRO. So, I had a stalker as a PhD student who now has to stay far from me. I used a pseudonym on FB (still do) b/c he stalked me in person & online. Altho not always the case, women get harassed more often in/out of academia. 1/
The new floors are finally in and I’m so relieved I could cry. One month after moving in and I can finally FINALLY unpack more than cleaning supplies, hanging clothes, and the kitchen.
I gave my students in Modern Political Ideologies where they had to interview someone with a different ideological perspective than themselves.
Readers, it is incredible--almost all of them chose to interview a cis-gendered man. Easily half of them interviewed their dads.
@DrSamiSchalk
Yes -- the 25th amendment allows for emergency powers to overtake a president's decision making power and give it to the next person in the line of succession: VP Mike Pence, in this case.
For the first time ever, I have a university issued laptop. I’ve only ever used a personal laptop. If you’re a two device person, how do you manage your content? How do you use the different devices? How do you stay organized with them both?
Going to the airport on time for my twice delayed flight because the food is expensive and the place is boring so at least I’ll be forced to get work done.
Theory fam: I have a student interested in feminist writings on love (heterosexual, primarily, but not strictly) and constructions of the family. We have read the "Love" chapter in Firestone's The Dialectic of Sex and she enjoyed hooks' "All About Love."
Any recommendations?
@theheatherhogan
@GoodHumorGrl
I highly recommend
@crulge
's Health Justice Now for thoughtful but accessible overview of insurance systems, including billing and how they work, and general thoughts on how to navigate the system. That's not the whole of this book, but its an excellent book that can help.
We’re also reading Why We Lost the Sex Wars by

It will be a blast—join us.
On another topic, I am feeling a lot of energy after my conversation with the Poli sci/Dis studies VC meeting today. We read the intro for
@DrSamiSchalk
’s Black Disability Politics and it generated such a great talk. I’m excited to dig into the rest (and you should read it too!)
"Focusing on graduate students in political science, we found that they have far worse mental health than other populations across a range of outcomes. Disparities in mental health and well-being are significantly related to how individuals experience their PhD program."
