@ronholmlab And I really hope that the practical application of these species as prophylactic probiotics which could contribute to colonization resistance and prevent E. coli clinical mastitis in dairy cows will be possible in the near future. 🐄

These species could contribute to resistance of bovine udder microbiome to colonization by E. coli and prevent future instances of E. coli clinical mastitis. Our lab @ronholmlab is testing the inhibitory activity of these species isolates toward E. coli in vitro.

We found negatively correlated commensal bacteria with E. coli from healthy cow - Aerococcus urinaeequi and non-aureus staphylococci. We found genes from these species genomes that could contribute to E. coli antagonism indicating their potential as prophylactic probiotics.

Microbiome modulation is a new approach to prevent and treat diseases. Can it also be applied to mastitis in dairy cattle?🐄🥛Our research article shows the potential. #bovinemastitis #ecoli @mSystemsJ

In this study, we show that E. coli outcompetes and displaces several members of the udder microbiome during CM, but that microbial diversity recovers post-infection. In milk from quarters which...
All of the hard work by @DYDY_Jung and the rest of the @ronholmlab finally paid off with a very nice publication in @mSystemsJournal

3. And we found that these organisms could encode mechanisms that can potentially antagonize E. coli. These species could be a potential way of preventing future E. coli CM without inducing inflammation.
