Over 6 months, mostly just by listening/being nice, I’ve been able to show protesters who thought CBC was fake news how I do my job, our fact-checking processes, etc.
It built credibility. Reporters need credibility in the communities we cover.

Listening - willing to hear people out even when it’s hard to do so - is part of the job.
Taking time to know a person, even a little, makes it easier to get into the weeds w/ them on how or why they think the way they do.
It also creates needed room to challenge that thinking.

Journalism is oft naturally adversarial — the “Fringe” sees MSM as adversaries — why add to this by positioning yourself as an adversary?

SaskPower raised rates for years during boom times, then decided to announce they were planning to lower them (conveniently) as the carbon tax loomed... now blame increase on feds.
