Cells are fast and crowded places. Numbers help us make sense of them. Here are five of my favorite "bionumbers." 1. ATP synthase spins 134 times/second. That is much faster than the propeller on most piston airplanes, and about half the r.p.m. of a Boeing 737 jet engine.

Great @SA_genomics event last night with @nanopore @UniofAdelaide. A huge THANK YOU to our speakers (@CristobalOnetto, @jafarjabbari and Dr. Kevin Fenix) for telling us about their research. And thank you to everyone who attended.

Can the propensity of Shiraz to develop peppery characteristics such as Rotundone be due to identifiable genomes variants? See this recent article in the Australian Journal of Grape & Wine Research published on 11 May: https://t.co/h70hlWT2Wt

The AWRI has just published a reference genome for Shiraz, and intriguingly, the data point towards a genetic basis for the pepper compound, rotundone. Read the open access article in @JournalGrape here: https://t.co/b0ZykVg13z

More thoughts on the demise of disruptive science. Take Fred Sanger, 2x Nobel Prize winner. Sydney Brenner wrote about him in an obituary that multiple times in Fred's career, he went 10+ years without publishing as he was working on 'disruptive' science. https://t.co/Y5JkuTPLHc

New Nature paper provides evidence that science has become less innovative since the 1950s. The authors suggest reversing the trend by: 1. reading widely, 2. focusing less on quantity of papers, & more on research quality, 3. taking year-long sabbaticals. https://t.co/oYV5JCXRl8

This paper is mind blowing in both its conclusions and its execution. Both conserved and rapidly evolving functions of a telomere protein unveiled by swapping it between species. End capping function conserved but TE control function changed.

Evolution strictly preserves telomere stability but rapidly diversifies telomere length regulation in Drosophila.
