I feel like it's time to leave. I've had a great time getting to know so many of you via Twitter. I wouldn't have made it through the pandemic without this site. But Musk has made clear that he wants Twitter to be the new Gab. See you on Mastodon, some other site, or IRL.

There are also tools to move all of your posts from here to there (keeping the original post date), if you want. I'll be doing that soon and deleting my account here. I hope to see you all at Bluesky.

With the recent exodus from here, my followers on Bluesky exceed my followers here. So, for those with a few thousand followers, don't feel attached to this awful place. With a little time, you will end up with a similarly-sized, but much better, community there.

I'm alive!

We are pleased to welcome Aya Gruber to #USCGould. Prof. Gruber teaches & writes in the areas of criminal law & procedure, critical theory, feminism & comparative and international law. Her scholarly works appear in leading journals including @StanLRev, @CalifLRev, and @NwULRev.

Ugh. My surgeon is still in his first surgery of the day. Mine is going to be delayed at least 2 and a half hours. Fasting must continue. So hungry and thirsty. Need caffeine.

So, in the words of a great Gen X influencer and philosopher: "Word to your mother." /end

If everything goes well with my surgery, I will check back in a couple days. Hopefully, that will be the case. But, if I end up paralyzed from the neck down, I will be content that my arm strength will still be much stronger than that of @Andrew___Baker. 6/

Whether in the form of open-source books, endless coding projects, community service, or small acts of charity, I try my best to pay forward all that I can. I encourage all of you (particularly profs, who live a VERY privileged lifestyle) to do the same. 5/

I'm a big believer in "paying it forward." I wouldn't be where I am now without the incredible generosity of others. So, I've spent most of my post-tenure career and personal life trying to do the same for others. 4/

But, I haven't just been thinking about work. One of my dear mentors, Andy Tazlitz, was taken too soon around the same age that I am now. And, his surviving partner sent a message that most of us refused to hear about work/life balance. I'm trying to keep her message in mind. 3/

For those who don't know, my health has really impaired me over the last few years (you might have seen me wearing a soft collar or otherwise limited). I'm hoping this surgery improves things and I can finally finish all the projects that I've put on hold. 2/
