The Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted 9+ years of course. But new US policy including supplying Stingers in 1986 changed military balance and within 3 years Soviets had left (after taking fraction of casualties as in Ukraine). Many obvious differences but point is tides can turn.
By January next year, Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine will have lasted longer than the Soviet Union’s war against Nazi Germany. It is an important psychological marker considering that Putin’s propaganda has sold the war to the Russian public as a replay of that conflict.

The EU deserves massive kudos for the way it's stepped up on sanctioning Russian oil tankers. At the end of last year, it had sanctioned only 77 ships. This number now stands at 556 (blue). Most important thing for the EU now is to convince Trump to also sanction these ships...
