Watching sprinters jog slow is interesting. They are highly inefficient going slow. Watch a distance runner sprint and they are often inefficient at max speeds. Running fast and slow are skills.

There are a lot of coaches who are very good at training kids. They know their drills. They understand programming. They can run a great gym session. But training isn't coaching. My old friend Bill Sweetenham puts it perfectly: "Coaching is neck up. Training is neck down."

The average high school coach gets paid so little that they actually lose money. There’s a bigger cost. Time away from family and worse, they sacrifice their peace. This won’t change. as parents, the least we can do, is let good coaches coach and just be fans of the team

Doing what’s expected of you isn’t special, it’s average. It’s what the majority of people do. Greatness requires extra work, extra time, extra sacrifice. Let your effort match your ambition.

Deliberate practice is not mindless repetition. If you’re doing the same thing over and over again, then you’re doing deliberate practice wrong. Likewise, even if you’re mindful during practice, you can’t skimp on repetition and still call it “deliberate practice.” Otherwise,
