Whenever I feel uncomfortable about something I think of this sign which was in Mr Bs cousins woodshed in NZ. Maybe I don't need to change? But chances are I'm not perfect.....😉

So this week in the world of farm/environment/land management/ mapping has been “interesting” And by “interesting” I mean “verging on the utterly bonkers” Why? Well this week started with Natural England, the government body that looks after the environment launching a new map.
England’s most detailed peat map is here! 🌱 Peatlands store carbon, clean water, and protect against flooding. This new map helps us better protect them. https://t.co/Y3gu6n2xPK Watch the video to learn more.

Sold our calves in Dingwall on Tuesday. 400kg at 11months. They were 50% up in £s on last yrs similar calves. That is insane! No wonder steak is security tagged! #ScotchBeef

👏👏 to everyone involved in developing this new tool 😊 Used the new @Norbrook liver fluke lateral flow test on the latest @InnovisLtd tup lamb intake - hugely valuable to have a pen-side test: pretty easy to use solo, quick results. And yes, treatment given 😊

I left here to go to threads, but it wasnt quite right. BlueSky on the other hand feels like old twitter. It isn't because I disagree with people on here, but because the adverts & sponsored posts are too much (& Im sick of adding to EMs wealth). https://t.co/BoAnNlVxxh

@DefraGovUK @SteveReedMP The frustration people are expressing today is that what you say you’re trying to do is stop wealthy investors exploiting a tax allowance while protecting family farms. Your proposal does the opposite. Someone buying up a nice house and 80 acres to let out then walk their dogs

‘Far right groups plan to hijack farmer protest’ Of course. Exploiting despair & anger wherever they find it. Beware; they do not speak for the countryside. Let’s hope they’re given short shrift if they turn out. https://t.co/98wwtYNKM9

Extremists including Tommy Robinson associates latch on to event but organisers say they want it to be nonpolitical

More thoughts on the #FamilyFarmTax. The alleged purpose is to attack ultra-wealthy people investing in farms. If I own a 400 acre/£5m farm, I need to keep it intact as a single agricultural unit. It is difficult to plan to avoid the £735,000 charge triggered when I die. I

🌱🐑 For those who saw the yet to germinate late radish cover crop at our September @FASScot biodiversity meeting ⬇️ check it now! 😍 Kind autumn weather has helped. Not ready to graze, but some early sown covers have excellent biomass, the sheep are incoming! 🌱🐑 #GoldenHoof

Well, the winter routine is underway. Preg testing, weighing, BCS scoring & blood testing last few days. A stressful time, but chuffed with the progress our herd has made. Gradually chiseling away does pay dividends over time. Select for what you want to happen and it’ll happen.

We are a small business. Just had a valued employee hand in their notice. We are not going to be filling the vacancy. I try and keep pretty positive but whatever this budget is, it is not inspiring me to try and grow our business. We just get pummelled at every turn.

With so much doom and gloom around UK farming & budget challenges, today’s autumn sunshine on this tree felt was a reminder to slow down & appreciate the life I’m lucky to live. Farming isn’t easy right now, but moments like these keep us grounded #autumn #Cornwall #farminglife

Don't ask about the cash cropping potential of this field which has 21 flowering species in the sward, n/inc. the grasses. Cannot claim payments on this parcel. About time historical nature friendly farming was given a bit more credit. It is not all about additionality

Just about got all the ewes sorted and back to respective fields before dark (5pm). But what a week we've had! Blue skies & warm air a welcome bonus as we head toward our darkest & dampest months.

The rural affairs correspondent role has also been downgraded - merged with a regional reporting position. Heather Hancock, who carried out the 2014 review that found BBC coverage had a 'metropolitan bias', said she was "dismayed and utterly perplexed" by both decisions
📺A decision by the BBC to “review” the role of rural champion at the broadcaster has sparked concern, with one insider describing the move as an “effective suspension” of the job, writes @FWAbiKay. READ MORE: https://t.co/yo9yuRNESz

Yellow card to Lomani but I still hate that law, some of rugby's disciplinary ethos is so lop-sided. Far worse things earn just a pen. It's a professional sport but there are still some laws that scream "best frown harder upon things that are simply not cricket old chap".

Found this a useful thread. Maybe need to focus less on 'we'll have to sell the farm' (a privilege many in farming dont have) & more on 'right, lets start talking & find a solution to this'
The Country Land and Business Association says the new £1m cap on agricultural inheritance tax relief will "harm 70,000 farms". That's 1/3 of all farms. What does the actual data show? Less than 500 farms/year will be pay more tax as a result of this change every year. Possibly
