Today we’re launching a campaign asking @ManCityCouncil to ban high carbon advertising. They’ll be joining councils like Norwich, North Somerset and Liverpool if they do #badvertsMCR

On 27 October we're welcoming @mitzijonelle, Filipina climate campaigner and former youth climate strike organiser, to Manchester. She'll be talking about the @fossiltreaty and winning a just transition with @nickdearden75, Charlotte Smith (PCS and @campaigncc) and Ameira Sawas.

European Capital of Cycling (Manchester) hasn’t really done anything of note or worth for Active Travel on the A6 yet either. Stockport aren’t alone in their inaction
Our members asked @AndyBurnhamGM why he is letting Stockport Council deliver a scheme on the A6 that: Doesn't provide safe cycle lanes ❌ Doesn't provide 24hr bus lanes ❌ This is his response:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, considerably older than Stonehenge that is vandalised more frequently 👇
Blue green algae season in Windermere is starting to take off. With last year being the biggest sewage spilling year in recent times, I wonder what the summer will bring. If you see this, then I would suggest not entering the water and definitely don’t let your dogs near it.

@ClimateEmergMcr And how about @ManCityCouncil and @AndyBurnhamGM pledge to protect all (carbon sequestering) urban green space from destruction, and @ManMetUni pledge either to give #RyebankFields back to the people, or dig out that ‘lost’ covenant and pledge to protect them in perpetuity?

@ManCity @ElectricityNW @WatesGroup @Bruntwood_UK @MAG_PressOffice ...and made waves about how it was the Partnership that got them to that point. Imagine if we got some actual leadership on #climate in #Manchester. end 🧵

@ManCity @ElectricityNW @WatesGroup @Bruntwood_UK @MAG_PressOffice Imagine the number of people who would pay attention if ManCity stopped flying to domestic games, and actually talked about that before a match. Imagine if some large builders really showed commitment to dropping gas altogether...

@ManCity @ElectricityNW @WatesGroup @Bruntwood_UK @MAG_PressOffice We are long past the point where small incremental changes will get us a smooth transition to a low carbon life. We are in for a rough time regardless. We had better start acting like it.

@ManCity @ElectricityNW @WatesGroup @Bruntwood_UK @MAG_PressOffice We’re seeing an ongoing lack of leadership from the “Partnership”. Asking people to make significant sacrifices to really reduce emissions in Manchester without any of the big businesses who are members showing they are doing the same - it simply isn’t going to move the needle.

@ManCity @ElectricityNW @WatesGroup @Bruntwood_UK @MAG_PressOffice What if sustainable aviation fuel isn’t all it is cracked up to be?

@ManCity @ElectricityNW @WatesGroup @Bruntwood_UK When are you going to refuse to put new gas heating into ANY new buildings? When will Passivhaus insulation become your default?

@ManCity @ElectricityNW what is your plan to upgrade the transmission infrastructure in Greater Manchester to support the charging requirements of electric bus depots, increased use of heat pumps and rooftop solar?

So how about it @ManCity, when are you going to stop using flights for domestic UK travel?

You’d have thought, if any of these organisations had any greenwash (or even, gasp, actual progress) to mention, this would be an ideal opportunity to do it. But no, absolute crickets.

Not a single organisation from the Partnership has responded. It’s almost as if their involvement in the whole ludicrous charade was a way to burnish their green credentials (although it looks like some of the user handles entered were…incorrect🤦)

The whole point of the Partnership, you’d have thought, would be to lend weight to the argument by the engagement of well known organisations in the city. “Look what Manchester City is doing! And the University!” And there is….nothing.

The linked page talks about retrofit, repair and re-use, and urban greening: all worthy things in themselves. There are links to “support”. It all seems fitting of the objective “engages and influences stakeholders and communities to act”. And yet…

On their website https://t.co/gDMHWSjdzW we can see the objectives of the Partnership. Bear these in mind as we proceed…🧵
